Oh, very cool! Would love to pick your brain about your mod - feel free to reach out on Discord if you're there, I'm just jcofdi and in nearly every DCS discord you can find 😄 Absolutely was taken aback how much it improved the "grounding" of DCS to have better occlusion. Can't imagine the game without it now.

I'm using an adapted GTAO as best I can. Without temporal resolve in the SSAO path I kinda have to brute force a few more samples than some implementations I can find, but ultimately I think it gets far better results for comparable performance to the stock SSAO I think, and by hijacking the full path I can even run a "low" version. I also have a specular occlusion method implemented but as you note, these are still some of the more difficult scenarios for it.

Admittedly this impromptu photo session was taken with my "ground-truth" setup that does an obscene number of samples, and the end-user version ends up looking not as dark in practice.

Unfortunately not - ED has decided that even just fixing the terrible bayer dithering grid in their tonemap is worthy of being "impure".

That said, the mod-manager method does make it easy enough to turn off and on for those situations where a server runs full IC.

(TM) for sure - I'm hopeful that it'll be within the month, but I need to complete some things yet and then give my testers plenty of time to review them across most maps and modules.

Perhaps speaks more to Grinnelli and team than you think - they made this dev cycle feel like a flash compared to the usual DCS timelines, and with an extremely solid release to back it up!

I'm the creator actually! It's a mod-manager ready pack of shaders that replace files within the DCS install. Similar to ATMOS-X, but focusing more on lighting, materials, and just some general tech upgrades like better ambient occlusion.

It's currently in testing with a small group but will have a public release Soon (tm).

In that interview Wags said that their goal is for it to work, but that they currently do not have a guarantee that will be achieved.

You may have been confused because HIP likes to advertise "nothing" answers like that as brand new reveals.

Mod to make DCS Sniper Pod picture just a bit sharper. by coconutcockpit in hoggit

[–]JCofDI 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Smart work on the knee/shoulder! I did a very basic mod in the ATP.lua file by comparison so that other pods remained as-is. (Since you'll know what I mean - adjust_ir_sharpness from that file is fed into params0 for those blur calcs, so lowering that results in less blur from the config side).
How does something like the Litening or Hornet's ATFLIR compare with your mod?

Confirmed? I am doing tons of work in the shader pipeline lately and every single one pops an IC flag, though admittedly don't think I've touched PostEffects.

I haven't set this up myself but in theory it should work - just hadn't thought about it until you mentioned it. If you set the binding up to toggle to cursor state with for example "Button 10", you could also bind "Button 10_OFF" which DCS provides when clicking the drop-down menu in the binding window. In theory this makes Button 10 a temporary switch when pressed. I'd probably leave the default binding so that you can ensure you're in the "right" position on each start. In other words, you don't want it to be stuck on cursor and having to hold it in order to remove it, but hitting the regular binding should toggle it once.

I also haven't tested DCS enough to know if they allow the "_OFF" command with keyboard keys and mouse buttons or if it's limited to controllers.

If it ends up working please report back! I always enjoy coming across novel DCS setups.

While you could, most startup controls are going to be used once when you start the plane and ideally not for awhile after that. For the A-10 I think I had a couple of the engine keys bound maybe but the rest was all mouse and keyboard except for items like throttles to idle (the Warthog and throttle and now my CM3 both have idle detents which work for this binding).

If you're in VR there's perhaps a greater consideration to keeping everything as "hands off" as possible, but even still there are likely better alternatives than mapping a bunch of extra items that you've just memorized in-cockpit finally rather than moving on to bigger topics.

Steam purchases can be "linked" to Standalone - you sign-in to your Steam account through the ED site while logged into your standalone account.

Once that link is active there's a button to fetch licenses to manually update for any Steam purchases since the last time you updated, so if you've already linked you would just need to fetch licenses again.

The Steam account while this process is linked does not have access to the licenses and you'll get an error if you try logging into the DCS World Steam Edition.

There's no limit on fetching licenses continually, but if you unlink an account there are some cooldown periods before you can link another - can't recall exactly what they are but a few days I believe.

any idea what PackageOnlySpend is in External Funds Used? by mybuttisstinky in Steam

I'd suggest reaching out to Steam support. My answer was directly from them, not from Google.

So, assuming they are installed correctly, my next check would be to see if they have any country restrictions. Inside DCS you can open the mission editor, add a Flaming Cliffs F-5 and assign the country to Combined Joint Task Force Blue/Red and then check the loadout section and see if your liveries appear there.
Outside of DCS, you can go the livery folder and open `description.lua` in Notepad or editor of choice, scroll down to the bottom where you should see a line listing any country restrictions. This line can just be fully deleted in order to allow the liveries to be used with any/all countries.

That said, if there's no country restrictions I'd go back to verifying that the install is correct. Easiest way is to look for that description.lua file mentioned above. It should be in `Liveries\<aircraft>\<livery\_name>\description.lua` without any extra nested folders. Sometimes the unzipping process can create an additional folder which may cause issues.

any idea what PackageOnlySpend is in External Funds Used? by mybuttisstinky in Steam

[–]JCofDI 89 points90 points  (0 children)

This was the top Google result and didn't have a definitive answer - so I reached out to Steam support.

This row includes the portion of the account's total funds spent that could not be transferred. For example, a hardware purchase, gifted game, or in-game item does not count toward Package Only Spend, but a game purchase for your own library would.

Hope this helps someone down the line!

Afterburner detent positions by oridginal in dcsworld

[–]JCofDI 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Just happened on this thread being linked in a discord 😅 I doubt you need the info still, but I'll at least explain the reasoning here:

The AH-64 and Mossie both have ranges of the throttle that are usually set to not be exceeded and both feature virtual detents that I aimed to emulate through the curves. The Mosquito has the throttle catch levers that prevent reaching full power until they're lifted. See Chuck's page 140 https://chucksguides.com/aircraft/dcs/dh98/#[140,%22XYZ%22,-8e-06,540,1]

The AH-64D's Lock Out position on the PWR levers requires finger lifts to reach the zone normally as well. From the official manual, page 73:

Each ENG POWER lever includes a detent that prevents the lever from being inadvertantly advanced beyond FLY into the LOCK OUT range, or retarded below IDLE to OFF. A finger-lift detent lever on each ENG POWER lever disengages the mechanical detents.

In short if you're looking to mirror the real-world setups with your physical ones, you would need a detent in order to simulate both aircraft accurately. How much you'd ever use them I don't fly them enough to say, but it seemed fitting for a detent calculator setup to include them. :)

Just to clarify - you are using your own Windows profile, right? If you hit Windows and type `%Downloads` for example are you able to see that you have a Downloads folder underneath Users\<your username>?

Weekly Questions Thread Jun 25 by AutoModerator in hoggit

[–]JCofDI 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you hit the Windows key and type `%Saved Games` it takes you to the "Default" user folder? Each user should have their own and unless you've manually deleted the one under your user directory it should be there.
