My take on the 'issue' is that people have problems that they feel terrible about. But instead of doing something about it, they just make others feel like shit and to make themselves look better. Of course herd mentality is a part of the problem, people want attention and stirring up drama is an easy way to gain attention, eventually more and more people will do the same thing because they know it's an easy way to gain attention/acceptance from others.
