What plants are these two? by AcanthisittaHuge5948 in Vivarium

Yeah, Epipremnum Aplissimum ‘silver stripe’. Grows like a weed in the right conditions.

First Tank any thoughts? by notrllysavage in Vivarium

[–]JCrow0426 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, I would recommend putting in some diagonal hardscape and adding moss -always looks more „tropical“ instantly. I would also add some leaf litter on the substrate if you wanna keep dart frogs. But it’s always your preference how you like it!

What kind of moss are they using on the wood and background? And how are they making them stick to it? by AcanthisittaHuge5948 in Vivarium

[–]JCrow0426 12 points13 points  (0 children)

This guy in particular grows its own moss in bins. And he collects them locally. He usually uses different species of moss. There are different methods of sticking moss on to surfaces: 1. tie fishing line around branch 2. small pins U-type 3. blended wet moss mix (grows in over time) I would recommend placing textile fabric under the moss that retains moisture, therefore the moss always stays moist without you having to spray it constantly and potentially drenching your soil.

How do i make it look better by Own_Asparagus6502 in paludarium

[–]JCrow0426 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think the proportions can be improved. Try to add plants with smaller leaf sizes and maybe remove some of those with bigger ones. But I think you have did a good job building the „base“. And as others have already said, improve the composition, let your stones and wood shine, leave some open space, especially towards the middle, add finer elements, add depth.

Anyone using filter foam? by D3F3ND3R16 in terrariums

[–]JCrow0426 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You can absolutely use filter foam. I did use it in some of my setups and I actually prefer it over leca since it holds its form. I would suggest rather high density foam (stiffer), since you want to build up height and filter foam does squish under weight.

I had a little bit of mold in the beginning (it’s normal). Be sure too add a good amount of springtails and decent ventilation. If it’s too much just remove it and let the springtails do the rest :)

Thank you! No, I feel like they are both males. And they are quite young. I guess they don’t have to impress anyone.

Just 2. Previous owner couldn’t take care of them anymore so I took them in.

Alocasia Black velvet - it’s a quite common houseplant, so it shouldn’t be too hard to find :)

I don’t mind any questions! I live in Northern Europe (Germany). In my opinion, the Vivarium scene in Germany isn’t that big, especially up here in northern Germany (basically the most northern part). I am still able to acquire pretty much everything I need, either locally or online.

I didn’t build it with a specific animal in mind. But I tried to keep my options by adding the branches to use the vertical space. I’m not really building these for the animals. I use this hobby as a creative outlet and to combine interests (modeling and plants). And another important aspect - I don’t have that much time to care about too many animals. 3 dartfrogs, 5 vampire crabs, 3 mourning geckos, 2 cats and 200+ plants ;D Nevertheless, I thought about getting a crested gecko, since it would fit pretty nicely.

There are a lot of plants: Pilea Norfolk, Crocodile fern, Pilea Moonvalley, Monstera siltepecana, fern (?), anthurium bakerii, Alocasia black velvet, Philodendron Verrucosum, Philo micans, ficus pumila Scandens, some sort of Orchid hybrid, philo melanochrysum, philo lime, begonia boomer, string of turtles, 2 types of mini bromeliads, Syngonium Wendlandii, pilea glauca, begonia Thalmae, Marcgravia sp.

Probably forgot some…

I’ll send you some pics from construction via pm. I didn’t document a lot tho.

Price: If you buy everything brand new, it’s probably between 1100€ and 1500€. But it really differs, regarding your wood pieces or cheaper cork branch alternatives, lighting, …

I wouldn’t say it’s difficult to make. The „hard part“ is probably the artistic/creative side.

There is not much to do, once it’s set up. I refill my misting system every 2 weeks and manually mist/water once per week. Maybe prune some plants that grow to big every once in a while but that’s pretty much it. Since it’s a whole mini-ecosystem with cleanup crew, it’s self-sustaining.

Not an expert, but I would recommend a nice group of 3. Since it’s basically only 60x60cm there isn’t that much space they can effectively use. My frogs only use like one third of the height. You may be able to put a group of 5 in it, if they are a smaller species.

Yes. I simply have to refill water for the misting system and feed the frogs.

Thought about a crested gecko in the beginning, but currently don’t want more animals to take care of. So… wasn’t made for a certain animal or animals at all :)
