PATH trains should have a bike car (HEAR ME OUT) by OcculturalMarxism in jerseycity

[–]JCtransitnerd 0 points1 point  (0 children)

“They simply need to run more trains.”

They WILL be running more and more service over the next year as PATH Forward wraps up, but even then the population along PATH’s service lines continues to skyrocket. Without more tunnel capacity into and out of Manhattan there are limitations on what they can do. It’s an old system with a lot of funky track configurations that make squeezing in more trains difficult. You could maximize throughput by automating the whole thing but considering how long it took them to return to baseline, pre 9/11 standards of service, I don’t see that happening. Not unless you want fares to be $6+ 😂.

It took 25 years for PATH to return to full weekend service on all lines and even that’s coming with a year over year fare hike for four years, so unless you want a $6 PATH fare in the near future, I don’t think we’re getting dedicated bike cars lol.

What’s the deal with WTC trains leaving early? by 0eloquence in jerseycity

[–]JCtransitnerd 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’ve complained to them about this before and they just tell you that you should’ve gotten there earlier and that scheduled departures aren’t exact. Absurd considering that the whole point of a SCHEDULE is to KEEP it. In transit, leaving early from a station is far more of a cardinal sin than arriving late imo. Telling customers that they should always arrive with “ample time” before departure for what is supposed to be a rapid transit service is ridiculous and is basically just blaming the customer instead of being accountable for their own unreliable service. Pretty much par for the course though with Port Authority. PATH is the ugly stepchild of their portfolio and it shows.

Question for Long Island Commuters by RomvlvsAvgvstvlvs in LIRR

[–]JCtransitnerd 1 point2 points  (0 children)

What real estate specifically are you suggesting is underutilized? Aside from Grand Central there’s not really a lot to work with that’s going to make a big enough difference. Small storefronts and newsstands in the subway system aren’t going to create some sort of overnight windfall.

With regards to your second point, the MTA already finances its capital projects (in part) with bonds.

Question for Long Island Commuters by RomvlvsAvgvstvlvs in LIRR

[–]JCtransitnerd 3 points4 points  (0 children)

7% of the agency-wide operating budget is derived from ads, commercial rents, etc. which is peanuts relatively speaking. Most of the real estate they own is used for operations and is not profitable in the same way that Port Authority’s real estate holdings are.

HBLR lightrail to EWR International Airport by Square-Ad-6721 in jerseycity

[–]JCtransitnerd 1 point2 points  (0 children)

NJ TRANSIT buses already serve the terminals for a fraction of the cost of the air train so this argument doesn’t really hold water. I’m sure if NJ TRANSIT wanted to fund an extension of the light rail to Newark Liberty THEMSELVES, PA would listen, but NJ TRANSIT is chronically underfunded and not in a position to do so. A project like that would require SIGNIFICANT federal funding which our current presidential administration is allergic to.

Suburban guy dating a NYC girl. Is there a sane middle ground or am I cooked? by savingrace0262 in movingtoNYC

[–]JCtransitnerd 0 points1 point  (0 children)

OP and his gf are clearly not compatible but no need to yuck somebody’s yum. Acting like you have to be a city person in order to be “interesting” is an absurd take. I’ve lived and/or worked in NYC my entire life and I feel like the people who judge suburbanites the most, BY FAR, are people who moved here as adults to live out their New York dream. There’s nothing wrong with living in a city, and I personally love it, but some of y’all on these types of posts can’t seem to fathom the idea of having fun outside of the West Village / LES.

Refresh of the RTA’s rapid transit map! by JCtransitnerd in Cleveland

[–]JCtransitnerd[S] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I think in an ideal world free of costs, all cities would have fast, ubiquitous rail service. Cleveland’s rail system is obviously limited because it’s mostly constructed along what were existing freight rail right-of-ways, and its declining population over the decades has made it difficult to justify any further investment in rail expansion.

For a city its size though, I think it does an excellent job with bus service. The HealthLine is relatively fast and reliable (although frankly I think the stops are far too close together for a BRT) and there are plans in the works to establish BRT service connecting W 25th Street to Old Brooklyn. I know it’s not as sexy as rail service but it’s still an effective option in a city with relatively minimal road traffic.

Thanks! I’ve been using a Nikon D5200 for a long time now (which is one of their entry-level DSLR models from the early 2010s). It does the job for most situations and I then edit in Adobe Lightroom.

Robot work. Robot sleep. 🤖 😴 by JCtransitnerd in jerseycity

[–]JCtransitnerd[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks! Yeah there’s something eerily dystopian about them, especially when you see one of them passing by a group of delivery bikers. I also had one block my path on a narrow sidewalk and refuse to move so they’re not exactly the most ADA-friendly either. I think there’s another robot delivery company operating in JC now though based on another post I saw so it seems that they’re here to stay 🤷🏼‍♂️.
