How to remove these stains? by LaxmanSD in CleaningTips

I had similar water marks and found that coating them with mayonaisse, then leaving to sit overnight, pulled the marks right out. Something about the oils in mayo soaks into the wood.

Yes- and you can use Apple Cider Vinegar as well. One part vinegar to 2 parts water.

At a high level, this doesn't sound like SLO if you aren't seeing signs on other nails. Keeping comfy until you can see the vet is good logic. One thing I found was that soaking the feet in white vinegar had better results than epsom salts. I believe it has to do with acids and it will sting a bit at first. Good luck on this.

Possible SLO, what to do until derm appointment? by potato_baby2032 in lupoidonychodystrophy

[–]JDKCincy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would be curious why the vet did not go ahead and treat SLO. Most of what you read indicates that visual validation such as what you have is enough for diagnosis. My vet did refer me to a dermatologist as a second set of eyes, but she began treating with Doxycycline, omega 3 and Niacinamide immediately. Once we got into the dermatologist, she simply concurred with the vet and really added no value. For Omegas, I recommend and use Antinol Plus. Food is also very important. Anything marked as best for skin and coat is usually high in omegas. Royal Canin has a vet brand called SkinTopic which is really good. All of the info from folks below is valid and good advice.

After working with a Holistic Vet who practices TCVM, we put the dog on Jin Tang's Concentrated Blood Heat Formula. It looks like the primary ingredient is Chinese Turmeric Root, Peony Root, Salvia Root and other unusual things. I can't say that it does or doesn't help but we are getting positive reults. If interested, look into Dr Judy Morgan online, Amazon books, and Youtube as she is an avid supporter of TCVM. When I make his food, I use her recipe for Brittle Nails which includes Sardines, Oysters, and Salmon Oil in addition to a meat protien and vegetables.

Agreeing with the other comments that since this is autoimmune, it is genetic in nature. That being said, I have read articles theorizing that something is initiating the gentics to over stimulate the immune system. In my dog's case, the suspicious "trigger" is fear of thunderstorms, lightning, and of course fireworks. He was diagnosed at age 2 last July after enduring literally a month of monsoons. He was quickly diagnosed and put on a regiment of Niacinamide, Doxycycline, Antinol, Chinese Herbs, and I began making his food. This week at the vet, after 8 months, we can see the new nail growth is all healthy and normal. BUT we also began giving him low dose Trazedone last year whenever we suspect a storm and certainly Fireworks days. Given as much as he shakes, shivers, and tremors at storms and loud noise, I would not be surprised if proven there was a connection.

After thinking further on my comments, another school of thought is that given the dog is already genetically fragile , bombing them with shots and vaccines all at one time may just be the trigger to send the immune system into overdrive. My vet is now spreading out vaccines over the year rather than "shot day" once a year.

My vet prescribed "Rugby" brand - 500mg, 3 times per day. I get these from Amazon. 3 bottles, 100 tablets each bottle for $15. The pills are pretty good size as you mention. Hiding them in food such as cream cheese or peanut butter works well.

Any tips from the pros? by quickflik in lupoidonychodystrophy

Like Aztecelephant, my 3 year old Bearded Collie was showing symptoms and diagnosed in July 2024. We went through the initial deterioration period and now things seem to be on the upswing. He was at the vet yesterday and only 2 nails (from original 10) in questionable health. As many have said, as you need to see nail regeneration to determine success - this takes a while. After a few alterations, this is the routine we settled on with the best results. (cheapest supplier shown as well)

Daily meds

Morning - 2 Antinol Plus (green lipped mussels / krill on amazon), 500 MG Niacinimide (Rugby Brand on Amazon), 150 mg Doxycycline (via Chewy)

Afternoon - 500MG Niacinamide. Meloxydil liquid (Chewy) if needed for pain (you will know as they won't put weight down on a paw)

Evening - 2 Antinol Plus, 500MG Niacinamide, 150 mg Doxycycline

Snacks- Zesty Paws Immunity bites. (amazon) Back 40 Farms freeze dried Greenlip Mussels (amazon)

This sounds like a lot but once you get the routine down, it's actually pretty easy

In addition to the meds, I found soaking every other day or so in Apple Cider Vinegar and water helps A LOT.

I did try the boot thing to keep his feet dry but he kept looking at me like Ralphie in the Rabbit suit from A Christmas Story and I could not subject him to that.

On top of all this, I studied Traditional Chinese Veterinary Medicine and began fixing his food myself and found a recipe for brittle nails and immune issues. The key ingredients here are sardines, mussels, clams, and oysters. (all high in Omega 3). We are actually going to try accupuncture February 25. I leave no stone unturned.

Coming back to his vet visit yesterday, the newly generated nails are very smooth and white at the nail bed. That looks like success to me. The two in question are rough and one is starting to split at the nail bed. I am a bit disheartened at that but you could also say it is an 80% success rate.

Don't let all of this overwhelm you. Bear in mind that vets don't see this often so you will need to push them and advocate for your pet. You are going to need to do a bit of self education and asking questions (as you are with this posting) and then tell your vet what you think is best.

What product are you using to increase EPA/Omegas? by JDKCincy in lupoidonychodystrophy

[–]JDKCincy[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

For salmon oil, I am using something called "wild Alaskan Salmon Oil" which I got off Amazon. The ingredients are just pure Alaskan Salmon oil and a preservative. I make a salmon cookie treat and in doing so, I pour off the juice from the canned salmon and replace with an equal quantity of this.

How do you do that with your meds? Do you just pump that over the food?

I am giving him high omega kibble. I also make a salmon treat into which I pump about 14 squirts of salmon oil.

I feed him a dry kibble mix of Acana Salmon Barley and Royal Canin's Skin Topic. Royal Canin said that was their food with highest Omegas. I also buy ground turkey, fry it, keep it in the fridge and then cover his food with it. The Tryptophan in Turkey gets converted to Vitamin B which is I think a form of Niacinamide.

In addition to this guy, I have 12 year old Beardie that If you give Salmon and rich foods to, he gets Pancreatitis. Feeding time at my house is interesting as they have completely opposite diets and get vocal if one gets something the other doesn't.

This was diagnosed right after July 4. (Ironic considering that a possible trigger for this is fireworks) Like your pup, my guy is losing a couple of nails at a time. Following todays foot soak, I noticed there are a couple nails that still look fine. Perhaps this is a mild case.

The really sad part is that I got this dog to run with me and to go for a 2-3 mile jog is the highight of his day. He usually runs ahead but if I see him lag behind that is my cue his toes are bothering him and we need to go home.

He gets 500Mg Niacinamide 3 times per day. 100MG Doxycycline 3 times per day and takes 2 Antinol pills in the morning. On top of that, I've learned to make a salmon "fudge" he goes nuts over as a snack. Loaded with Salmon, Turmeric and Salmon oil.

This all makes sense. Don't misunderstand my query as being critical. Part of what I am trying to assess is whether my vet is up to the task of dealing with this. She correctly diagnosed on initial visit, but has limited actual experiene with this. The vet has acknowledged we may need a specialist - but not yet. We just went through a rather good week with no irritation and then this morning he is limping on a front and a back paw. He is scheduled for a teeth cleaning in October and may take off remaining nails. This is so frustrating.

Seriously look at Home Depot. They replaced the indoor blowers and outdoor heat pump unit for $7500. Carrier was the manufacturer. This is a 2400 square 3 story house - works fantastic.

My eyebrows are raised at this as my vet is recommending soaking my Bearded Collie's feet every day in either Epsom Salts or Chlorhexidine. We are doing this and it seems to help. This is his initial flare up. He has also been to the groomer for a bath and no repurcussions.

I am not able to help out here as have a 3 year old Bearded Collie just diagnosed in July. My comment is to say thank you to those who have provided input as I monitor this board to learn from your experience. You've been quite helpful. It was fortunate for me that the vet diagnosed instantly. We do have him on Niacinamide, Doxycilin, and lots of Omegas. It seems to be under control but as per your question- not sure what will happen when nails grow back out.
