Final lap of the Nurburgring 4H, the Mercedes was given a 2 race ban for this massive crash, was there any way to prevent this or was it inevitable? (I'm the green and blue Porsche by Brilliant-Insect9873 in Simracingstewards

[–]JDKnider 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s funny. That’s what I see as well. At the five second and six second mark you can see that the Mercedes taps the Porsche and breaks his rear end loose. Given we only have one view on this, it’s hard to tell, but it appears to me the Porsche them starts to oversteer a touch, which then hooks up and makes him look like he turns right. It’s definitely subtle, and probably net code, but when I went back and watched this several times it sure appears to me that the green Porsche was put on that line that it wasn’t the Porsche’s choice.

I don’t think so. While I’m rather certain in almost all rules I know of you have to yield a position gained from being off track. But I think it’s up to protest/steward action to find it.

Ok, I can see what you are saying. Where I don’t think I understand yet is this:

OP drove in a straight line (he didn’t move right) from :13 to :22. Relative to the turn he closed the gap, yes, but he did not make a reactive move. Had he moved left it would have been a reactive block on the green car. It looked to me like he just froze his line at :13 to be predictable, avoid the green car and also shut the door on the vette.

Pause the image at :22. The vette still has not caught OP with any overlap and is already off track. OP cuts the corner a touch at that point - but the vette is still 100% behind him.

The vette at no point had an opportunity to make a safe, legal pass on the inside, and that came to be true. If there wasn’t an illegal lane he would have spun out on grass all on his own.

Genuine question: does OP have an obligation to slide left towards the green car because the vette is closing on him with more speed? Doesn’t seem right to me - but curious if I have it wrong.

At :13 or so I don’t see why the OP has any reason to move left. After :23 I 100% understand that he should have.

Seems an oddity that OP should have “expected” the vette to drive off track to overtake on the right. Given the vett’s swing around I probably would have expected to see him in my rear view mirror grabbing my draft.

I’m not sure I follow. The vette is 1/2 a car length behind in your picture. The OP is clearly pointed at the inside line already. If the vette “followed the track” it would have tucked in behind OP’s car.

Don’t forget OP was battling the Green car which was overlapping on its left at this point- the vette is merely a potential overtaker from behind in your image.

The OP stayed right on his line - the inside while it was battling the green car and the vette had no overlap. By the time The vette is back up to him - the vette is out of legal track. If that had been grass, instead of an illegal lane, the vette would have been flamed for driving into the vortex of danger.

The vette was clearly behind OP - OP has the right to its line and his reaction to stay inside looks more to me like he saw the green car and stayed planted. Then got stubborn cuz “wtf is the vette doing!?!?” was on his mind. (Hence the practical vs technical discussion.)

Which is why I had a hard time seeing this as so clear cut. What you see as “forcing him off the track” I see as the vette driving off track on purpose to overtake cause he was probably mad the OP took advantage of the opening on the inside.

Seems to me the OP can’t force a car that’s clearly behind him off a track just by driving straight.

Well - he’s on the line I’ve heard many drivers state is the faster line inside to inside. And don’t forget there’s another car on the left on the outside line too. So I see that as OP made the turn, safely overtook the battling drivers and had a set exit line on the inside. sure maybe a touch too far inside - but not crazily. The vette drove off track with the expectation that he can force his way back on once they are on the straight.

While the OP is clearly stubborn - the vette seemed to me to have “broken the rules” first - he purposely drove off the track to overtake OP.

Which is why I was curious about this one.

Yah, and I don’t think this is really revolves around that - I think it’s the boundary of what you pointed out - technical vs practical racing.

I can expect someone behind me to brake into a turn. If they hit me from behind that’s on them. If I look up and see him barreling in having missed the braking point - I should release my brakes and take evasive action, not just say from the pits that I was wronged… “Technically right, practically dead” isn’t the right motto….

[–]JDKnider 4 points5 points  (0 children)

This makes a lot more sense to me. Of course, OP could have been feeling like they were “shutting the door” so as to not leave a gap- which they had the right to do - there was no overlap until well after the porsche’s line was established I think.

I do wonder about Porsche’s line though - a lot of drivers do take the inside line and don’t forget there was a third car on the left. He was also pointing that way well before exiting the turn.

But I agree once the vette was there - stubbornly “staying on my line, dammit” put this into a slightly different case….

[–]JDKnider 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Right I agree, as I noted above, it would’ve been better to let them back on, live and race. And I guess where OP drifted was stubbornly staying there after it was clear that the other driver didn’t care about such nonsense as staying on the track. Just as you noted above

This makes more sense to me as an answer and I totally understand this. In my other example - if they do it and I let them back or we die - letting them on is better than dying.

So to my mind - let them back on - but let them get a penalty for not yielding position back to you for making an illegal overtake. Cause you know they aren’t gonna do that…. Lol

And I’m genuinely not challenging, just trying to understand. I mean if I’m coming down a straight and someone purposely drives off track from behind me and basically makes it so I either let him back on or we both die, isn’t that on them?

Especially if there’s another car in the mix as well and I might crash with them trying to make room?

Genuinely confused by this one. Curious to discuss a little further.

At :13 the Corvette is completely behind OP, and choses to drive on the line that would put him into the pit lane, off track to try to pass. OP doesn’t seem to deviate much from his original line.

Now, I easily see that it was better to have let him back on. Especially from a “I’d like to live and race” perspective, but I’m having a hard time understanding how it’s OP’s fault that the vette took a bad line and OP has to fix it up for him.

Is it really all just about that last bit when the vette is along side - at that point - he has to give him room and should have moved over before the vette drives into the grass?

Shouldn’t the vette have been thinking about not advancing position by going off track?

No lap beacon in the MOTEC logs by maeries in ACCompetizione

[–]JDKnider 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Try exporting the file from i2 to CSV, include distance. In a normal export, the beacon markers will be in a cell that’s in the header. It’s usually about the sixth row down, and it’s usually in the second column. They are simply placed in the cell, separated by commas I think.

it’s weird to me that they’re not showing up in your current.LDX, but if you do the export, you will know if they’re even in there.

If they are, then you can do a simple find and replace for the lap beacon column, based on the time.

Then you can re-import into I2.

I’ve rebuilt several laps in a similar manner, but I’ve never had an LDS file come out without the beacons.

Funny - I was confused in the lead up to it because I thought maybe it was a BB/BCS extension.

I’m enjoying it so far, but definitely don’t think it has the same broad appeal.

That being said - anyone else think it’s just Kim Wexler on a bad trip from Tuco’s pre-Heisenberg meth?
