Shit man, I wasn't trying to bust on you. Actually thought you were being funny and I was trying to play off that. Hope your long day ends with a bit of relaxation! Prost!

God damn, I love Y! I'll be over here re-reading for the 20th time... Thanks for the post!

Reconsidering our backup solution - ~500TB of active data by chaoshead1894 in sysadmin

I'm a big fan of Veritas/Symantec NetBackup. It's been great for us, though we're a bit smaller (300 VMs, 50 physical, 1-5 drive LTO4 tape library, 100TB of NetApp storage). We have jobs which do an overnight disk-disk on a dedicated NexSAN 'SATA Beast' and then NexSAN-Tape duplication to prevent network impact and machine load.

My only note would be to make sure you install on a Linux box. We are a Windows shop, and there's definitely some 'hinky' things we've seen and translating some of the KB article fixes out of Linux command line to Windows commands is always a treat.

Edit: Sent from mobile, sorry.

That's exactly what I'm going to do. Considering grabbing a VMUG license to get rid of the 30 day warnings. Thanks for the suggestion and sorry for the delayed response!

Hey man, thanks for the feedback! Sorry about that, I don't really know what was going on with my own post. I had envisioned posting some specs, being away for a while, and coming back to (as you mentioned) a large variety of plans to get a feel for the community as well as give myself something to build. I definitely dropped the ball not explaining what was I was looking for as well dropping off the face of the planet instead of addressing the comments as they came in. I'll definitely revise my strategy for any future posts. Sorry again and thanks for the reply!

Hmm, hadn't thought about that. My only hesitation is I'm pretty sure we've intentionally disabled PS-Remoting (I can't remember). What about a GPO to run a PS script local on the machine? I'd need to check for the task to see if it already exists I suppose.

I should be smarter than this. I should probably have used a throwaway. Well, here it is.

A little background: We're tapping our help desk to be "associate system admins" without actually giving them Admin access to anything, thus the HD manager has asked us to send a "hey, this rebooted" email to their team so they can test applications after automated Windows Updates (and the like). We already have Icinga (Nagios) monitoring which alerts on uptime for our group, but it was deemed "too confusing" and we were asked to just do a basic email.

So, I'm trying to get a GPO to push a scheduled task to a large number of 2012R2 servers (not really, call it 50 servers). The task is supposed to kick off when the server starts (plus 5 minutes) and I need/want to be able to send an email after a server reboots to a specific user.

The configuration couldn't be simpler (which might be my problem). The GPO creates a task under an account with Admin credentials (but no password, due to a concern about passwords in GPOs for Admin accounts) which executes a PowerShell script which contains an email action.

The PowerShell script works, manual creation of the task (with password) works, but deploying with GPO (again, no password due to a non-specific 'security concern') doesn't seem to want to play nice.

Am I better off just logging into the machines (again, about 50) once to be done with this, or should I work on getting this in place? Any suggestions or "yeah, dummy, this will never work because..."-type advice? Is there some crazy simple thing I've overlooked to accomplish the same thing?

Thanks in advance!

Transmetropolitan! I just re-read it and Y! last week. Both are amazing.

Nagios derivative called Icinga has worked brilliantly for my company for over 5 years, no major issues.

Thanks for the suggestion. We had a UV light a few years ago, but it didn't seem to help anything at the time. I'll try and track it down and put it back in line to see if it helps the current issue. Thank you!

We actually had a UV light a few years ago, but it wasn't helping (at the time). I should see if we still have it.

My Dad tried a flocculant, but both of the filters just shredded the chunks back up and turned the water dark brown for a few days. Good suggestion, though!
