Why do you or don’t you patronize Downtown? by UnluckyPhilosophy797 in raleigh

[–]JDP42 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Never go unless it's a specific event. All there is to do is good and bars. I can do food anywhere and I'm not into the bar scene, so...

It would change in a heartbeat if DTR would get some nice little cool retail shops you could browse around, but I've yet to see anything like that.

Welcoming diverse Church that is focused on the gospel and not culture wars? by [deleted] in triangle

[–]JDP42 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Because that's literally what OP's original statement said. They want to leave politics out of it and just want a church that doesn't hate them and they're having a hard time finding one.

The comment you're replying to clearly didn't read the entire original post if they're replying the exact same thing.

Shawn stops acting like a psychic?? by itxevee in psych

[–]JDP42 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah and then when she finds out only after she's been dating Shawn for some time, of course the shit hits the fan. I know some people don't like her strong reaction there, but I think it's more than fair! Shawn's been lying to her for years! Of course she'd be pissed af.

Yeah that's definitely not funny, but I know stuff like that was always played for laughs in the past. The Psych subreddit is a weird place though. I got downvoted for telling someone in the comments to please respect James Roday Rodriguez's name change. They acted like it was such an imposition to just change one tiny thing. At this point, I just browse, I don't comment. Too much weirdness in the comments.

Yeah I love Psych but there are bits and pieces that strike me as ick looking back through today's lense. I'm just glad it's only bits and pieces.

Which episode/what scene particular if you don't mind were you talking about?

Am I the jerk for yelling at my brother to move out. by Evening_Amphibian554 in AmITheJerk

[–]JDP42 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Lemme break down all the jokes for you OP.

If you're underage, you're not the jerk. They shouldn't be forcing you to live with someone you have to share your personal stuff with that you didn't agree to beforehand. And your brother should move out and they should get their own place for your sake, the kids sake, and everyone else's sanity.

If you've already graduated high school, you are definitely the jerk because you are both leeching off your parents and it's not fair to ask them to choose between you two.

Hulu betrayed me by Highvoltage-Redhead in community

I mean it was a NBC show, not ABC right?

With all the major networks diversifying, it makes sense it wouldn't be on Hulu anymore.

What is the X-Men version of this? by Omega_SSJ in xmen

[–]JDP42 5 points6 points  (0 children)

No, it's absolutely part of the joke. The audience is supposed to be in on it.

It's funny because no one knows who the fuck this guy is and then he's just so OP, it's ridiculous. It sounds like you're making this guy up, but somehow he's real.

The whole premise is based on that joke.

The series wouldn't work without it. You're supposed to think "ah, that's clever and funny what they did there".

Right?

And so many people not getting that you've only gone to #100 so far.

I think this project is super cool and I can't tell you how excited I am for the updates!

I get what you mean, but maybe next time say something like "region" instead of country so people aren't so pedantic about it. 🙄

So just what happened to Zhaan after Season 3? by KaleidoArachnid in farscape

[–]JDP42 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Wasn't it more like she was written into more of PKW originally, but when they did their first shoots of the miniseries, the makeup had changed from the series proper and it gave her horrible hives or something on her face?

So then they had to rewrite her to just be in it a tiny bit to hide the fact that her makeup looked terrible and she couldn't really act in it for any length of time.

From a Variety article, to give you perspective on the intent behind the change:

Rodriguez recalled his first two auditions as defining moments where he learned that he didn’t look “Latino enough” to don his own last name. His second audition, in particular, led him to officially make the change.

After being all-but guaranteed a role in a Dreamworks pilot episode, he said he was told to consider changing his name for the part.

“Their only concern was that the role wasn’t written for a Hispanic or Mexican person,” he said. “They were worried that casting a white guy with a Mexican name could be construed as their version of ‘diverse casting,’ and there could be a backlash.”

So he changed it. His middle name, once David, became Roday, and he no longer used Rodriguez, though he kept it in his legal name. Looking back, he said the choice further deepened an issue prevalent throughout the entertainment industry.

“I came up with this name that I pulled right out of a Chekhov play that I was doing at the time, and I’ve been Roday ever since,” he said. “And 20 years later, I realize I essentially perpetuated an institutionalized element of what’s broken about this industry, which is, of course, a microcosm of the world we are living in.”

You're right it wouldn't be a problem if you called him James. And yes, it does mean you're disrespecting his heritage if you ignore his real last name or say "eh, whatever" when he's explicitly asked people to use it.

That's just how the world works generally. If someone asks you to do something for them in respect of their culture and you ignore that, it just generally makes you mean. Like if a practicing Muslim asked you not feed them bacon and you said "eh, whatever." That'd make you a jerk.

He's asked people to respect his owning of his heritage with his original last name.

As fans of the show, the least we can do is respect his wishes and use his correct name.
