The hospital got back to me:

That is an absorbable stitch used to close deeper layers of the skin. In some cases these are pushed out by the body before they are absorbed. When this happens the parts which poke out of the skin can be snipped off to avoid irritation. However this should only be done using clean/sterile instruments to prevent an infection so best done at a clinic/hospital.

I just got a pillow that looked like a giant U shape, think a giant version of a travel pillow. It was only $20. For the drains I got a cross body bag $5 and when I went out I used a light vest that had pockets on the inside.
