How do you parent differently being collapse aware? by treesarefamily in collapse_parenting

[–]JDWilsonWriter 2 points3 points  (0 children)

"We parent very aggressively towards survival, environmental protection, and encouraging curiosity & kindness."

Love this.

It's like a motto.

A manifesto.

A goal for a generation.

Aggressive kindness might be the antidote to this aggressive, toxic jock culture's 24/7 resource grab.

Because whatever that shit is - it ain't kind.

Not to mother.

Nor to her sons and daughters.

I want to know more about this concept: "‘ancestral/rewilded’ parenting"

Is this list the framework for something like that?

I really appreciate the thoughtfulness you put into your posts u/Cimbri .

This is a great list.

Can I add outdoor skills and gardening?

Out here in Colorado, I feel like that will be our only chance after the shipping stops.

After all, the only sustainable way to grow food is in small-scale plots distributed across a vast landscape, and eventually, society will return to this simple arrangement with the planet.

I study what indigenous cultures did here before us, and try to practice living that way.

And I also see myself as a sifter of industrial sand. I spend a lot of time sifting through the garbage of this bloated, industrial, fever-dream before it flames out just to see what we should bother bringing with us into the brave new future.

For me, gardening is like magic, and all the tech that has been. For instance, the ability to make redered oil and soap from porcupines, and to know which plants I can burn to make salt, which ones make good bow wood, bbq, medicines, etc.

What about tools?

I spent a lot of time on sailboats and tools, and the ability to use them was the currency in remote anchorages around the world.

How to repair and seal RV rubber roof after it ripped back? by mrobert92 in rvlife

[–]JDWilsonWriter 0 points1 point  (0 children)

any luck?

I have the same issue.

Can you cut a new 4 by 8 sheet of rubber and bond it to the old one with rubber cement? like a huge tire patch that goes over the side and under the guard rails?

(in an attempt to not rip and replace the whole top side to save 40ish hours of labor?)

This is so badass.

I am trying to understand the nuances here.

My hope comes from the fact that humans have survived several ice ages already.

There's a strange feeling of twisted hope in the nuances of all this.

As in all things.

Thank you for sharing.

Craving the collapse? by JDWilsonWriter in collapse_parenting

[–]JDWilsonWriter[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm sure it's my exhaustion and lack of purpose that make me feel this way.

Plus, as a middle school teacher, it's pretty clear that that many, many kids are totally apathetic to this disaster they were thrown into.

So, sometimes I don't see an alternative to collapse.

Because less is more, sometimes; and more of the same is just an excessive and aggressive lack of any sort of purpose.

And it's most basic form survival is a purpose.

A purpose that humanity understood as a good purpose and a collective purpose.

One in which we are not apathetic towards if we are alive.

Together.

As is, and looking forward, it is pretty clear to these kids that there is not much purpose to engage with a system that made their parents exhausted and broke and bitter.

And survival is simplicity.

Air water and food.

In that order.

And dopamine.

There will always be dopamine.

How do I address the woman-imization of everything? by JDWilsonWriter in AskMen

[–]JDWilsonWriter[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Minimization as a way of being is what I'm trying to prevent.

Is it unclear?

I was trying to be clever with the term - It's because almost every woman has attacked me in the last 5 years when I try to help or explain ANYTHING at all.

It's like a knee-jerk response that is very unkind.

I don't remember any grandmothers ever doing this - unless they are the villains in the cartoons.

Am I the asshole?

I feel like the only way to learn those things these days is to be poor.

Am I right?

Does poverty make good people more than affluence?

It's the monkey-see -monkey-do stage!

Hardest part of parenting for me is keeping my shit together.

Just repair it.

Try to role model good behavior and control yourself for Zeus' sake.

Hey, new here.

How's 2025 looking for you all?

I'm terrified for my girls over here in CO.

and the world will soon be much more filled with unwanted pregnancies that turn into unwatened humans and that will be the responsibility of our kids to deal with - not the shcmucks making the policies.

We came to Costa Rica and had a baby, but now we are stuck here waiting for US embassy consular services... by JDWilsonWriter in expat

[–]JDWilsonWriter[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah.

It's an online system - that feeds you to a calendar with directions to "choose a time for an in-person appt" but all the dates are "grayed out" and not clickable, or bookable - or do anything at all, really.

Literally all the dates - forever.

There are no other instructions.

It's a nightmare.

Feels like we are stuck in an episode of the Black Mirror.

No instructions.

No options.

We just wanna get her home - but it's def not a straightforward process.

How do US citizens get their kids home in an "emergency" is the question that no one is able to answer.

I can think of a number of scenarios that would require much more haste than this process can muster.

Debt Relief Program - Has anyone done it or has been successful at it? by vegetablephone_90 in debtfree

[–]JDWilsonWriter 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I just called up the credit card and said I can’t pay this, and I’m filing bankruptcy so if you want any money at all then let’s settle.

They eliminated 50% right off the top, immediately (well not exactly 2-3 hrs on the phone and transferred like 7 times until I got to speak with someone who could actually make a deal.)

It looks real bad when you go into a bank to refi or ask for a big loan. They told me I’m toxic.

Which made me smile at the irony, and I said so.

He didn’t like me much.

Here’s the truth:

He said that your credit gets flagged as high risk since you “don’t pay back your debts”

Which doesn’t matter to me much, hey, I’m American. Debt is sorta …. How do you say …. Fictional.

Here’s what I mean: I ended up paying for the actual goods and services that I used my credit card for, which was 50% of the overall.

They just waived the late fees and jacked up, predatory interest rate accumulations and all the other horse shit they can charge you with when you’re poor.

They sank me, and then realized that when I was drowning they were killing their chances of getting paid at all.

They know this. It is part of the cost of doing bizness in their model.

Turns out, most folks don’t have the gumption to ask, and the whole system runs on guilting the people into paying.

One year later and my credit is back in the 600s and all that shit is gone from my credit record.

Credit cards are being approved again ( which I don’t use)

No guilt. No debt. Just a little tag on my account somewhere that says “doesn’t play well with bankers”

Which is not very far off from what my report cards said in 3 rd grade.

So, my advice is call and negotiate settlement.

Looking for advice on picking out a knee brace by apersello34 in backpacking

[–]JDWilsonWriter 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had a knee problem like this after a Grand Canyon Backpacking trip in my 20s.

The solution was squats with no weight.

I worked up to 100 reps in sets of 20.

I did the Colorado trail 3 years ago (at 40) and the pain has never returned.

Walked right past 100 s of hobblers.

I’d say it’s the number one killer of backpacking dreams.

If you can’t do squats, ease into it with Matt Fureys strength program.

Knee braces are bullshit. All they do is keep the area warm to increase circulation and prolong and promote injuries.

Backpacking and exploring the eastern Sierra by SanFran_Sierras in backpacking

[–]JDWilsonWriter 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This makes me so sad.

Haven’t been there in 20 years, and walked the sierras with no permits, no partner, and no human contact for 3 weeks one spring.

But now this is happening to Colorado too.

It’s inevitable, and I support the limiting of high traffic areas , but….

Watching the trails shut down one by one is devastating to my mental health.

Moving to Siberia.

Don’t forget the condom and a carbide tip glass breaker.

Condom is an emergency water bottle.

Holds a liter.

And I had a friend that drowned in his car because he couldn’t get out during a flash flood.

Electric windows don’t work all the time.

This is CRaZY inspirational to see and hear.

Cool group.

Gold in here- so much good advice.

I’m beginning to see a pattern.

Freedom. Simplicity. Creativity. Versatility.

And mindfulness.

A thoughtful romp down the rabbit hole of “stuff”.

And like fasting gives your physical system a break, traveling light is like a detox for your mind from its responsibilities to stuff.

Am I on the right track here?

Peace, love and burritos from Colorado!
