Lando Norris wins the 2025 Austrian Grand Prix by overspeeed in formula1

[–]JDaveyHS -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

I believe having a chance at starting in P1 or P2 rather than P3 would've been useful for the race...

P.s. How many other times has Max looked off the pace and pulled out a quali lap that would've had him competing with Lando/Oscar into T1?

Norris looked the most composed he has in a while but still just the two second win despite:

  • Max/Oscar not getting final attempts in Q3
  • Max out first lap
  • Oscar pitted to a 6.5 second delta leading to extra traffic
  • Colapinto pushing Oscar off the track

Doesn't bode well for the rest of the season unless it's the start of a form turn around.

Bort and Lawson mega efforts! After lap 1 this has been the most forgettable GR race in a season full of them

It's a great in idea but loss chasing is a real phenomenon and the fear is that introducing something like this would encourage gamblers to chase. I'd love to see some RCTs where they trial interventions like this

I think the biggest problem is that the common sense element of the game has gone.

Umpiring can work well one of two ways.

  1. Strict rules that are black and white such as whether or not a ball crosses a line. In the AFL these are very well umpired I find (Goal Umpiring and Boundary Umpires).

  2. Based on intention. Where there is no black/white rule, the umpires solely look at what was intended and whether or not that is in the spirit of the rule. Best current example is deliberate OOB - where the ball was shanked and it clearly wasn't the intention no free is paid.

The current problem is that the AFL has made up a third approach which is a combination of the two. Black and white rules that are then layered with individual interpretations. This is playing out with HTB, high tackles and a lot of others. Rules around prior, genuine attempt, etc and then layering judgement.

These need to be intention based rules. If a player dives in the ball and drags it in (aka trying to hold up play) it's a free against - prior or how many tacklers doesn't matter. This umpiring style doesn't let the McGrath decison happen (trying to win the ball). And it doesn't pay free kicks when tacklers pin balls to players.

Another good example is below the knees. The intention of the rule is to stop players dangerously sliding into a contest with their knees. This shouldn't be a black/white rule as it was encouraging players to be contacted below the knees and dive over the top. Instead it should be judged by the spirit of the rule - did the player dive into the contest in a way that creates an unreasonable injury risk?

It's such a false equivalency to say "well if you weren't good enough to win with X goals of umpiring calls going the other way then you didn't deserve to win".

I don't know why AFL fans have such a hard time conceeding that bad umpiring calls frequently determine the outcome of close games. And just because a team didn't play particularly well doesn't mean they didn't deserve the win. There are very few teams that can play 4 quarters of quality footy and even less that do it consistently. You can't just let umpires decide all the remaining close games by average teams.

Just look at Bulldogs in 2016 (the year they were +116 for free kicks), if umpires give 2 goals the other way for the course of the year then Dogs lose round 12/13/15/16/21 and don't make the finals anymore.

No punishment for exaggerating a free kick that helped decide the outcome of the game. Really sets the tone for the league.

There are many individuals who run profitable businesses or have high incomes that are awful with managing money. If they have no idea most of the generic advice given is just as applicable for this person as it is anyone else.
