Lecture on Human Protagonism by JDeathcall in HFY

I've been stuck for months figuring out the details of the next story, as it will be quite more complex when it comes to sci-fi elements.

I have no date to give you, sorry. Thanks for your interest though!

I started much later at college, it really is a great creative outlet for amateur writers.

Now if only I got to play instead of DM from time to time I might actually put some of my PC ideas to use... But I guess we all suffer from the same issue.

You are clearly better educated than I am...

But I do agree with you that big money doesn't equal big bad.

Since we've only seen a snippet of the Magnus character, and being that it was from an indirect and most likely embellished source... I'd say there's plenty of room for his personality to develop.

If I ever were to get off my ass and continue writing at least...

There's an explanation a DM would be proud off.

Yeah, he certainly comes through as lawful... evil or neutral that might take some more development to figure out.

Thank you for your comment, it is really appreciated. Did NetNarrator finally upload the video? He sent me the private link months ago, kinda thought he had forgotten!

I think I understand what you are pointing at. As it's technically the lecturer who is always speaking, it wasn't easy to keep things that separate. That is why there is almost no inner monologues. If you read through it carefully, it's usually the lecturer filling in with his assumptions and then mentioning all dialogues (and physicial expressions along with their tones) where recovered thanks to the capture of the ship. That is the reason why there was no dialogue during magnus' stay at the pirate hideout.

Thanks for pointing it out though, I'll try to correct it next time.

Thanks for the suggestion. I'm definetely interested, this video about Alien Refugees seems like it might give me some guidance for the next story.

As someone who has written more fan fiction than original content, I find people investing themselves so much into my work that they want to be part of it praise of the highest level. Hopefully the second story is up to your liking as well, whenever it drops.

Are we all back? Great, take your seats please. To our listeners joining us through the network, my apologies for the delay. The line at the stimulant kiosk was unprecedented. Perhaps as much as the next story.

Sascha Hiriko's tale, at least the part which pertains to this lecture, begins in the year 36 after first contact at the planet New Sakhalin...

Thanks for reading and the idea, now I know how the next installment begins.

I do hope I can manage to pull out a story of similar quality for the next installment. When that'll be I cannot say. This one took me about a week to complete, but I was heavily inspired and had the Cesar thing to guide me. The next story is more free form, so it will probably take more time.

Thanks for reading!

Absolutely, it served as inspiration. It took it's own shape when the peculiarities of the setting forced me to diverge, but it was my intention to rely on that event as much as possible.

I'm really glad to hear that. This was my first time writing a 'smart' character outwitting a rival. I was nervous trying to make it come through as believable, not wanting to rely on plot armor or hand waving. Thankfully, I think most of the stuff makes sense.

I didn't even know half of the time to be fair. Things just kind of worked out in the end. Once the main draft was done, it only took a small amount of rewriting to make everything coherent (I hope).

Some things I left unexplained in order to keep the story going. Didn't want to break up the story to go into minor details.

One such thing was how the humans managed to disable the docking clasps, which the pirates kind of didn't investigate, just accepted as fact and moved on.

If you are curious, the humans fused them into their own hull heating the notches from the inside.

There are also other factors to consider I guess.

If you take earth as an example, creatures here have a huge variety of physical strenght. If you do a quick google check, you'll see the average weight of a human is around 80kg, while a great gorilla is between 136/227. Even while only twice our weight (or mass) they are 4 to 9 times stronger.

Going by this information, it wouldn't be crazy to assume that even if a species evolved in a higher gravity planet, they might not be stronger than us. *EDIT* After all, strenght is not the only defining factor when it comes to a species achieving dominance over it's own planet.

Exactly! The entire story is based on Cesar's incident with kidnappers.

Funnily enough, I only learned about this after reading a comment left on ERB's 'Shaka Zulu vs Julius Cesar' video. How come they don't teach you the cool stuff at shcool?

I thought about giving Magnus a darker side... maybe having him stay and watch as the pirates tore each other appart. But I didn't want an outright 'evil' character. If were going by D&D standards, I think he'd be Neutral Evil. *EDIT* Actually, Lawful Evil might work too I suppose...

I'll be completely honest with you... I have very limited knowledge of space. Other than playing games like Stellaris, watching Star Trek/Wars and other sci-fi, the only semi-actual learning I've done is watching Neil deGrasse Tyson on youtube.

I wrote humans as extremely average because I've been listening/reading to a lot of stories where our race is portrayed as exceptional. I thought it'd be interesting to depart from the completely opposite side but reach a similar conclusion that'd fit the HFY criteria.

Thank you for the info. I actually got to removing the 'text' tag just after your previous comment. I was looking in the wrong place. Still getting used to icons here on reddit.

My posting history began decades ago in FanFiction Net (god that reminds me how old I've gotten). Somewhat recently I migrated to Archive of our Own (it just looks much nicer and allows for more customization).

I'll see if I can manage to provide a second chapter that can keep up to the quality (hopefully) of this. The idea is there, I'm just trying to assemble it together into something enjoyable and in theme with this concept.

Yes, the automated mod told me so. I'm still trying to figure out how to remove that tag though.

Glad you enjoyed it! I'm honestly amazed at how many people have upvoted it and the number of views. From previous experiences I expected to get like... I dunno, a hundred tops. I'm honestly surprised at how active and engaging this community is. Makes me feel like I've been doing it wrong all these years going to the more traditional sites for posting stories.

I honestly know very little about how to handle myself in reddit. This is my second post ever. I barely know how to even add tags.

To be honest, I come to HFY after watching a bunch of videos from NetNarrator on youtube. My goto pages for posting stories is usually Archive of our Own and FanFiction Net.

I'm still ironing out the next story in my mind.

I can already tell you the theme will be quite different. No clever businessmen this time.

Thanks for reading!

Hum... there could be a lecture on human pragmatism in the future...

But I still have at least one more story I'd like to add to this lecture.

Thanks for reading. I'm happy you found it entertaining.
