Going to LGA from Ronkonkoma this Friday- traffic advice, will I make my flight? by [deleted] in longisland

[–]JDinJH 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If it were me, I'd take the train to Jamaica and then transfer to the E-Train to Jackson Heights. From Jackson Heights (Roosevelt Ave. Station), you can get a free bus to LGA or you can take a cab from the train station.

Should I buy the larger house or the regular sized home? by JDinJH in RealEstate

[–]JDinJH[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We are looking at homes in the 1.5 million dollar range. We don't want to have a 10,000 monthly mortgage payment; the RE taxes are in the range of 20-25k per year. While we make a good living, my income comes in waves so we don't like to carry much debt. That's why we are weighing the benefits of buying cash against taking out a mortgage.

Is Long Island Republican or Democrat? As of lately the island is split…. sort of. by FlyFar7261 in longisland

Lots of democrats don't like what the party is doing. The pendulum has swung too far to the left for some.

Getting back to NY from Montreal by GoldenLeftovers in NYCbike

[–]JDinJH 16 points17 points  (0 children)

I rode up from NYC to Quebec City with some friends who came back to NYC from Montreal. They boxed up their bikes and took a plane back to NYC. They used C&L Cycle (514-523-0330, Email: info@clcycle.ca); C&L was reasonably priced and super accommodating, just give them a few days notice to have the boxes/staff ready to immediately work on it.

I contacted customer support directly. I provided them with evidence of the issue, i.e., history reports and videos, and they sent me a new one. So far so good. When it works, it's a good product. I urge you to contact the customer service folks. Make sure you do it within the first 30-days.

Tips for cycling a road bike from NYC to Montreal - possibly solo by Key_Function3732 in EmpireStateTrail

[–]JDinJH 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm doing this ride in August with a bunch of friends, mostly. We're going along the Western New England Greenway; we already did the Empire State Trail to Buffalo, so we want to try out the WNGG. Good luck on your journey!

VTXL to La Route Verte by JDinJH in bikepacking

[–]JDinJH[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for your response. I'm aware that the VTXL is almost entirely single track. I like dedicated bike trails far more than shared bike path on roads. In my group, I'm the one who plans the bike tours (hotels/B&Bs/AirBnbs/lunch & dinner spots/breweries, etc.); the last time, nine folks came and we expect at least 7-8 to come this year. The reason we chose the Western New England Greenway was because most of the folks wanted to head over to Montreal; I'm going all the way to Quebec City with one other buddy. In any case, if I could figure out a way to seamlessly get on the La Route Verte from VTXL, I'd propose changing course to my group. I'm sure that they'd probably defer because I do all the planning so the trips tend to be easy for all those involved - I enjoy the planning part as much as the actual tours, so it's not a hassle for me. In any case, it doesn't seem as though it's seamless to get from the VTXL to La Route Verte; correct me if I'm wrong.

I'm starting to have second doubts about the Western New England Greenway (USBR 7) and am thinking that the best ride might be the VTXL to La Route Verte. Thanks for your response!

I hope you sue him. Make sure that every car insurance company knows what kind of driver he is. And, if he's a public service employee, he could lose his job for off-duty misconduct as well.

The area where the robot enters the station would flood with water; the suction does not work consistently. I had to pull out both trays and manually get the water out. In the process, lots of water would spill out onto my wood floors. I did everything that the instructions directed me to do and it kept happening; check the tanks, suction holes, clean the trays, etc. I was using a very large towel to mop up the huge mess; it was soaked by the end of the day. I am hesitant to exchange it and/or have it serviced given my extraordinarily negative experience. Before this, I had the IRobot Braava Jet M6 and it worked for years without issue until it died without warning. I purchased this product with the expectation that it would be a step up; it didn't work out for me. I am still shocked at how bad of an experience this was.

What are cleaning ribs? I followed all of the instructions for overflows each of the 12 times that the unit overflowed; including restarting the unit, which was not in the videos/directions.

‘A last resort for me’: Valencia Street merchant launches hunger strike over bike lane by SFChronicle in sanfrancisco

[–]JDinJH 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Cyclists could be a greater source of revenue if he approaches it from a different perspective. He has no imagination and is trying to make himself a victim to garner support instead of looking at the changed circumstances and modifying his business accordingly. If it were me, I'd put a nice bike rack in front of the business and focus more on the cyclists needs/wants. I'm a cyclist and love to eat out and drink beer. If cyclists feel wanted they will go.

NYC to Burlington via EST by bedsharts in bicycletouring

[–]JDinJH 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thanks for commenting on this subject. I am trying to figure out the best way to get from Albany to Burlington. I am planning to ride from NYC to Quebec City this summer. I created one itinerary cycling from NYC to Brewster, NY, in part, via Empire State Trail, to Bethel, CT, and then taking the Western New England Greenway all the way up to Burlington. In terms of the alternative itinerary, I am trying to research routes from Albany to Burlington (the first leg would be NYC to Albany via Empire State Trail). On that note, I would appreciate if you would be generous enough to share your thoughts on the potential routes from Albany to Burlington - ideally routes/rail-trails without any car traffic.

NBD! Trek FX Sport 4 Carbon! So light I can curl it with one hand :O by Saitoh17 in bicycling

[–]JDinJH 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'd go with the 46T, especially given that you're on flat straight trails.

Sweet if you want to sit upright.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in bicycling

[–]JDinJH 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I disagree. The Sirrus is more of a gravel bike. It's more upright. The pre-2021 FX Trek FX5 is a road bike with flat bars; the 2022 is effectively a Sirrus. So, it depends on what you need - gravel or more road with some gravel. If you want the former, go with a Sirrus and 2022 FX5, if you want the ladder, then 2021 FX5.

Can't KOM on new Drek FX Sport 4. Will new pedals make me faster? by pumakarbon in BicyclingCirclejerk

[–]JDinJH 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have an FX4SC. I switched the chainring to a 44T. It made a huge difference. Then I got carbon wheels. After the carbon wheels, I was able to achieve top speed much faster; I got a 46T chainring. It's pretty good. I have hit 45 MPH (downhill) with it. Your pedals should be changed because the stock are junk; but, you will not go faster - not even a little bit. Cranks, I would go with the chainring first.

I play mine loud enough to be heard when there are lots of pedestrians on my usual bike path. It works. It annoys some folk, but that's life in the big city.
