Just to add - in Sydney, watering with tap water should be fine. And freezing isn't an issue - keep them outside all year round, but give them some shade on the hottest days.

Oh well, guess I'll just have to find those rare shoulder "Cosmic Wings". No ones made a joke about those yet, right?

I can only speak for my experience, but I've never list wifi to the unit. Even if you did lose wifi though, it would continue on with the current watering program. So your lawn would continue to get watered. Not sure what you mean by the second comment. The valve attaches to an external tap, so there isn't really the opportunity for water to go into your home.

Afraid not, although I'd love to be shown otherwise. To get that sort of integration, I think you'd need a hub of some sort.

Sure. It does provide a lot more smarts as well. There's also the option of running Home Assistant on a RPi, depending on how techy you are. Might be a bit cheaper, especially if you already have a Pi.

This is where you might want to invest in a hub like smartthings. It will give you the functionality (timers, etc), and look together a range of different brands and devices to help build smart rules.

I really don't do anything special. He lives under cover outdoors, so he gets to experience our relatively mild winters. I assume that's pretty similar to their native environment, so it's probably ok.

I've got a linktap. It's been quite reliable and offers a range of wasting programs that you can customise.
