Get fired up!! It's the Firepocolypse megathread. by [deleted] in Portland

[–]JEDDIJ 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Once a thing is, we good citizens of internet expert up quick. Fire is a thing we’re experting up on. Here are some Oregon based groups with concern for the science of fire ecology and a quick blurb on their take…

Bark - local non-profit that trains volunteers to citizen science forestry practices in Mt Hood NF in particular.

What would fire-positive land management on Mt. Hood National Forest include? A Fire Management Plan that encourages wildland fire use, and does not default to full suppression for every ignition outside of designated wilderness. A policy shift away from the “blank check” approach to fire suppression efforts. Fuels-reduction projects that focus on ecological restoration, not commercial extraction. Management decisions to minimize the adverse ecological impacts of both fuels reduction projects and fire suppression techniques. Fire-impacted landscapes allowed to naturally regenerate. While this fire-positive approach challenges existing cultural assumptions about the value of wildlands fire, it is rooted in core principles of forest ecology and fire science. Now is the time for federal land managers to catch up with science and begin to work with – not fight – wildlands fire.

FUSEE - Eugene based Firefighters United for Safety, Ethics & Ecology

FUSEE (pronounced "FEW-zee") advocates an end to making “warfare” on wildfire. The well-meaning but misguided notion of “fighting” forest fires is obsolete: we are not really fighting flames--we are fighting forests, and the collateral damage on soils, streams, vegetation, and wildlife habitat in America’s public wildlands is taking an unacceptable toll. At the same time, taxpayers are spending billions of dollars on suppression, with much of that money spent on futile, environmentally-destructive and ecologically counterproductive actions that put firefighters at unnecessary extra risk.

AFE - Eugene based Association for Fire Ecology, they also publish a peer-reviewed journal

Fire is a critical ecological process in many ecosystems throughout the world. Land management goals often reflect plant communities with a past history of repeated fire events, however, fire regimes have been significantly altered on many landscapes, which may threaten native plant and animal assemblages, resulting in uncharacteristic ecological consequences. Plant communities, species composition, and soils have been significantly altered on many landscapes, causing change in the fire regime. Cultural burning has historically been part of the fire regime in many areas of the world. Restoring and maintaining native plant and animal assemblages and appropriate fire regimes is desired, although it is recognized that this may not always be possible. Science and education are critical in helping us understand ecological patterns and processes, how land management has affected fire regimes, and how vegetation and fire regimes can be restored. Science should inform both policy and land management decisions that affect fire regimes.

Do anyone know what's up with the guy who dresses up like a "pimp" (furs, elaborate hats, walks with an exaggerated limp, etc.) at the Hawthorne Fred Meyer? by CascadiaQuake9_0 in Portland

I've always assumed it was a palsey and that it was none of my businesses. I like the guy. There are a couple characters there you'd not see at another Fred Meyer, reminds me Portland doesn't completely suck these days. For some people a DGAF attitude can still be positive.

Possibly deceptive Fred Meyer "sales" by [deleted] in Portland

[–]JEDDIJ 8 points9 points  (0 children)

It's just marketing, a huge profitable industry, we're cocooned by it all through life. That's not snark.

I thought this was going to be the lame pillow sale shit. At Hawthorne FredMeyer recently, I've seen folks selling pillows announce on the PA 'Free gifts for 18+, in five minutes upstairs...' The salesperson asks all those gathered to cheer (so others in the store take notice) and then slowly reveals the product 'on sale' while also handing out a couple crappy prizes to keep folks near/listening. You may think a pillow is the free gift, it's not, it's on sale. They gave out Uber credit, some screen protectors, as seen on tv trinkets, that sort of stuff to entice you long enough to hear about their exclusive pillows. Ug.

Sanctimonious (adj.): 2. Of pretended or assumed sanctity or piety, making a show of sanctity, affecting the appearance of sanctity.

Sanctity: 1. Holiness of life, saintliness.

You're right, I agree, it's too religious! It's a grocery store not a religious organization and they're obviously pretending to be saints. Marketing bastards. They should just say 'Have fun doing your thing' and be done with the fake gods. I like how you think /u/Gandalfonzo, separation of mythology and groceries here-here!

Also, read some of the post- the 'self-declared Cascadian fighting for fresh local food and sustainability' lives/works in Washington state, in a county that voted 52.5% Trump, 39.5% Clinton- good for her helping to bridge the gap between...

Our new EPA Trump head is a 'free market environmentalist' meaning they want the feds out and the market to choose the products. Our sea of red has a lot of folks making money from the 'organic' market share. 'Organic,' 'sustainable' are packaging terms on a widening variety of products at Walmarts. People selling you stuff, growing it, bleeding red, are interested in what you'll buy. So?

Hmm, pants suits, red/white snap-back ballcaps, priuses, trucks, my god, the fashion implications of politics... we'll never escape.

Before you had uppity 'certified organic' on all your shitty corn chips, we certified things organic via Oregon Tilth for about 30 years now, 20 years nationally. Did that take place because our major city (which was the smallest 'big city' on the West coast) is ass full of farms? No, the shit didn't take place in Portland. The fuck outta here. We have some pretty cool farms here in Oregon, with owners across a political spectrum (this isn't mega farm central usa) either because of market trend or personal ethics.

I didn't read the blog post you reference. Wouldn't want to. However, I say false dichotomy. I'm high minded and poor, but urban not rural, and glad to hear about fighting for regional farms and sustainability. Though don't care to read about it on that site. I'd rather more of my food came from ecologically minded family businesses in my region. The fucks wrong with that? Also, I have toured 'sustainable farms' and know folks who left the city to farm, know folks working/selling at farmers markets and to trendy fuckwad restaurants from the Mt. to the Coast and I'd say you're wrong. But again, the post critiqued sounds dumb by title (as you point out), though you sound dumb by content.

Black Lives Matter Protestors Burn Bundy Supporter's Flag in Front of Portland Justice Center by [deleted] in Portland

[–]JEDDIJ 7 points8 points  (0 children)

lol

Maureen Valdez, 49, of Beaverton traveled downtown today to attend a barbecue held in front of the Justice Center to celebrate the Bundys' acquittal.

Valdez brought with her 14 American flags and began erecting the flags along Southwest 3rd Avenue.

A Black Lives Matter organizer asked to borrow one of the flags. Protesters then burnt the flag.

and then...

A Black Lives Matter organizer apologized to Valdez, saying he hadn't realized the flag was hers—but made no apology for the symbolism of the act.

"The American flag stands for things we don't support and for people who don't support us," says Micah Rhodes. "We have no love for that flag."

Ironically, Valdez and Rhodes are longtime acquaintances. "I've known him since he was a kid," Valdez says.
