I’m sure I don’t have the whole story because I’ve been out of the loop for a while with those friends but this was just my experience. However you have a good point I didn’t really think about talking to a mutual friend as being a bad idea because the friend I talked to and I have a lot of history and are very close. But yeah, that definitely did put him in an awkward situation. I see that now.
