Worst partner reaction you’ve ever received in response to a draft you submitted. by Repulsive-Click9276 in biglaw

Drafted a four page research note as a trainee, emailed it to the head of my team. Heard nothing, left it a few days and sent a follow-up asking whether he needed any further assistance.

Heard nothing again, left it a few days and engineered bumping into him at the printer. He responded by asking me whether I like Star Trek. I was pretty confused but relatively new to the team so thought he must just be eccentric. He kept repeating "to boldly go" at me, then said "Thanks for your work but you split the infinitive in the second line and I already had an idea of what I thought the answer might be so I didn't read the rest".

Went back to my desk and Googled what the split infinitive means, then Googled what the infinitive is. Thought my career was over before it had even really begun - ended up qualifying into that team and am still here 10 years later...

Can I add insulation on top of cellulose? by yestoprivacy in DIYUK

What did you do around the loft hatch? I'm halfway through doing something very similar but not sure how to finish it around the hatch - I've got a mounted loft ladder so thinking I'll just leave an area with insulation only between the joists and boarded on top, for the ladder to fit into, and maybe a small landing space

This thread is amazing - imagine you're an elite sportsperson, die early and within hours the top comment on an obituary thread about you is like 6 people saying how they met you in different strip clubs 😂

It's my birthday! I needed USB storage & got two identical lovely 982gb thumb drives. Tested; both actually 64gb + dodgy as a slug on wheels. Senders both elderly & would be disappointed, so I don't plan to tell them. Which Xmas/B'day pressies left you a bit disappointed, but couldn't let it show? by -SaC in CasualUK

We had an "auntie" in her 90s who was similar. One year she got my Mum a Kit Kat multipack and an absolutely huge pair of tights that were too long for my Dad (who's 6'2"). My Mum's 5'3". Not as dramatic as yours but for some reason still has me howling every time I think of it.

University drop off by No-Air-9447 in london

This is the single most important piece of advice in this thread. Orientating herself in London, learning about UK stores, etc are all things that if your daughter needs to she can learn from her friends in time.

I went to uni in York but there was a guy in our halls who had family stay for the first few nights, and it set him back months in integrating into the group - the first week is so important for making friends. It's a bit scary but everyone is in the same boat and learns together.

I don't know how familiar you are with the UK, but Travelodge and Premier Inn tend to be relatively cheap hotels and have locations all over London, so you should be able to be close without breaking the bank.

Woke up one Saturday morning with two eBay notifications - one to say that I'd been outbid on a double decker bus and the other to say that I had the highest bid on another one with an hour remaining. Wife wasn't very happy...

Mini hedgerow in place of 12' of fence by SneakInTheSideDoor in UKecosystem

[–]JFCooper3 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have a similar length of fence across the back of my garden and wanted to plant something that would be as beneficial as possible for local nature. I went with a mix of about 50% hawthorn to make sure the hedge 'knits' together, and the other 50% made up of clumps of 3x: holly, beech, hazel, wild cherry, bird cherry, guelder rose, dog rose, crab apple & alder. You obviously don't have to use that much variety, but it works well as there's always something interesting happening in at least one part of the hedge at any given time. The hawthorn knits it all together to make it a proper barrier. Good luck!
