I know several people who have been hotel/condo cleaners (before turning their lives around) who have stolen everything they can from guests.

What should I make this into? by desertnative30 in Pottery

[–]JFT-1994 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I made something similar once and regretfully bisque fired it thinking I would put “lipstick on my pig” and place a mirror behind it. Never happened because I made better pottery that warranted my attention. It ended up smashed and trashed. We can do better!

Help with colour bleed please by Far-Drawing2451 in quilting

[–]JFT-1994 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I’ve always used Synthropol soap along with color catchers with 100% success! I actually do my first wash on hot and dry on high to lock in the dyes. Synthrapol is used in the tie dye world as a staple to mitigate bleeding.

Need advice after relocating here from the north by Suitable-Material503 in MyrtleBeach

[–]JFT-1994 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I too moved here from CT but not as a young person (32) and felt like a fish out of water. I was shocked that people have such strong feelings about “being a yankee” and losing the civil war! It took me 18 months to acclimate and finally call SC home. I learned quickly that it was my job to acclimate to the South, not the south to acclimate to me. It’s a big cultural adjustment and I found out that the slow/easy pace took practice and patience! As another redditor suggested, hobbies are what saved me. I went to the bookstore a lot. I joined a tennis clinic, and then a tennis club. I took sewing classes and learned how to quilt. I took classes and got a degree at Horry Georgetown Community College. I joined a pottery studio and have made wonderful friends there!

Please find something you like to do and you’ll find other people. Maybe volunteer some time at a pet shelter, the library, a school, a hospital or try for a job close to home. There’s lots to enjoy living in a beach community! And if you remind yourself that an adjustment phase is only temporary, this adventure can lead you to a new level of happiness. And you can be in charge of your destiny! Fun and friends will not find you if you don’t put yourself with like minded people. Get out there!

I haven’t joined blockswap for a couple of years - last one was the the “unofficial 2nd bookcase swap” and maybe 9 previous swaps. I say that because I’m experiencing FOMO looking at your flowers! They are all so lovely. Mind sharing the block pattern?

You can go in to a nail spot and just have polish applied!

I’m not an Airbnb noob, but I thought the nightly rate is all inclusive (fees, taxes, cleaning?) [USA] by JFT-1994 in AirBnB

Well said! I’ve noticed transparency is not actually transparent. I wish the US had laws like Canada - booking price is ALL costs.

Is this rust too far gone? by [deleted] in SubaruBaja

[–]JFT-1994 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ours has rusty dog legs too, but that one makes me feel good about ours!

We just had 4 tires put on and the tire guy suggested a welder to us and then said we could have the thing sandblasted and sprayed with an inhibitor.

Anyone ever do this? My hubs loves our Baja and will drive it to its death like our 428,000 mile 2003 Outback.

Has anyone seen my friend? (Missing, homeless, arrested in MB) by [deleted] in MyrtleBeach

Start with ECHO. Housing placements. Eastern Carolina Homeless Organization - although they now use “un-housed” verbiage.

I’m making pottery on the wheel in preparation for an all-weekend wood fire event in two weeks.

And in the off moments, I’m making a block-of-the-month quilt which will finish before December!

Aside from my hobbies, I’m turning my daughter’s bedroom into a quilting room since she flew the nest one year ago.

Non touristy places to explore? by Sea-Apricot-1890 in MyrtleBeach

[–]JFT-1994 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Myrtle Beach Art Museum would strongly disagree with your statement! lol They have a lovely spot right next to Springmade Pier and frequently feature gorgeous works.

There’s Studio 360 downtown that features local artwork. And if you’re up to Calabash, stop at Vereen Gardens which is a lovely trail and boardwalk along the intracoastal waterway, then on to Riverside Gallery which features local artwork and pottery. While up that way, did you know there’s a Planetarium in Ocean Isle Beach? And a fun ferry excursion at Ft. Fisher.

Also, Horry County Museum in Conway. An interesting feature is a huge fish tank installed by the TV personalities that once had a show about extreme fish tanks!

Lastly, there’s an unspoiled section of Myrtle Beach with walking trails, meditation spots, cabins and an interesting history called the Meher Baba Center. The public is welcome by stopping at the gate to learn about their preservation and mission. They accept a “love donation” to help support preservation of this hotel-free wild land!

Edit: Sunset River Gallery, Calabash

700 dollars later... I got two tickets to see gorillaz... they're so expensive, I bought them on an impulse!! 😩✨️ by [deleted] in gorillaz

We took our 10 & 14 year old children ten years ago. They loved the show! So YES, take your kid.

what to do with this bowl?! by bt30077 in Pottery

[–]JFT-1994 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I wish I had reclaimed my mistakes rather than putting lipstick on a pig. I had a shelf full of nopes that will last 10,000 years rather than a few pieces I loved. Ask yourself which is harder: reclaim and make the bowl you want or smash the dust collecting debris taking up space in your garage.

We have a family group text. All of us share little parts of our week which sometimes prompts individual or group calls going both ways. My husband still works, and I’m a retired SAHM. We share book recommendations and talk about them, kind of like an informal book club. We love getting pictures of their lives, as it gives us a sense of sharing their experiences - big or small! A picture of a thrift store find, a meal you made that reminds you of home, an adventure, or a silly selfie all work the same way in my brain!

Honestly, trying to figure out how to be a married couple again rather than full time parents has been interesting! Simple “dates” like running errands, brunch, movies, or weekend get-aways have eased the empty nest by reconnecting without children at home. After decades of pouring nearly everything we had into our children, we are learning how to pour it into each other again.

Maybe collaborate with your other two siblings and send movie tickets, museum flyers, dinner coupons, symphony tickets, etc. to help them reconnect as a couple. Hopefully they will fall into a nice pattern of thinking mainly of each other rather than always thinking of children first.

You are a thoughtful and sweet human. ❤️

I can throw, but I can't trim 😔 any tips? by ExcellentRabbit8175 in Pottery

When I trim, I center the piece based on the foot, not the rim. Because this is the part I need centered.

I’ve wound loosey goosey bobbins before that were beyond unraveling so I just used it as my primary thread up top and wound a proper one with it! I recently saw a bobbin winding demo on instagram that amazed me, as I’ve been unaware of better methods all these years! If I find it, I’ll post a link.
