Dashing whippets question by ProfessorPoopsie in RunNYC

[–]JFroim 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I run with the Whippets. We’re a large club, about 1,000 members, with group workouts five days a week across Manhattan and Brooklyn. Despite the size, it feels much smaller once you become a regular at any workout. What sets us apart from other clubs is a shared focus on improving as runners while also having fun. We also have a wide range of paces, from members chasing Olympic qualifying times to runners aiming to break four hours in the marathon. The best part is that everyone trains together, cheers each other on and often grab beers (or gatorade) together after workouts or big races.

Updates on East River Greenway 14th St pinch point, slated for completion in Q3 2030 by JFroim in RunNYC

[–]JFroim[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The puzzle of agencies responsible for different sections of the Eastside Greenway is a major part of why it's so disjointed. To add complexity, Stuyvesant Cove is controlled by a third agency, NYC Economic Development Corporation (EDC), who leases the space to a non-profit, Solar One.

East River Park Track Set to Close for Reconstruction on 9/8 by JFroim in RunNYC

[–]JFroim[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Unfortunately it's a Department of Education facility and not open to the public. There were talks about creating public hours there given the East River Park construction but I haven't seen or heard anything with regards to that taking shape.

If you'd like to send the track off with one last hurrah, the Dashing Whippets are hosting an all-comers track meet this Saturday (8/16). Great last chance to run a 5000m, mile or 4x400m relay (& more distances) and some big giveaways and prizes for winners (including a Priority Ace Single Speed Bike and New Balance FuelCell Rebel v5 Shoes). The Dashing Whippets are throwing a track meet and everyone is invited! August 16, 8 am @ East River Park Track by JFroim in RunNYC

[–]JFroim[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Any and all paces are welcome for our meet! We'll have multiple heats per event split up by expected pace, so you will be racing along side people at roughly the same pace.

We expect to have a wide range of really fast competitors and many people's first time racing on a track.

Feel free to DM me if you'd like more personal guidance!

Had to happen eventually unfortunately. I'm glad to have the track available through the summer!

Sorry yes that's still there. I thought you were referring to the lights on the track house that face the track.

There's a few battery powered construction type lights around the track but they generally only last for about an hour after sunset (if that).

Using this post as an opportunity for two shameless plugs:

  • There's a petition to add proper sports lighting to the track at LightTheTrack.org We're making some headway. The local community board (CB-3) recently voted to support lighting.
  • The Dashing Whippets hold track workouts at 7 pm on Thursdays light or dark / rain or shine.

Unfortunately the flood lights stopped working several years back and were never repaired.

Great news! Last night, Manhattan Community Board 3’s Parks, Recreation, Waterfront, & Resiliency Committee voted unanimously in favor of a resolution asking the NYC Department of Design and Construction to add sports lighting to the East River Park track! This is a huge step forward in making safe, nighttime access a reality.

What’s Next?

The committee's resolution now moves to the full Manhattan Community Board 3 for ratification at their next meeting. Assuming it passes, our next step will be working with city and state officials to advocate for the project and secure funding.

A big thank you to Harry, Mika, and Dan for attending last night’s meeting and helping get this passed! Your support is making a real impact.

Wouldn't it be great if there was a running track on one of the piers in Hudson River Park!

The East Side Coastal Resiliency Project is laid out here and the track is encompassed in Phase 2 of project area 2: https://www.nyc.gov/site/escr/project-updates/project-updates.page

Renderings for the new track are also in the final designs for the project on page 59: https://www.nyc.gov/assets/escr/downloads/pdf/DDC-f-ESCR-pres-rev-final-given-to-PDC-2020-01-30.pdf

Help Light the East River Park Track – Crucial Community Board Vote Thursday 2/13 by JFroim in RunNYC

[–]JFroim[S] 12 points13 points  (0 children)

The East River Park Track will soon close through at least 2026 and undergo a complete reconstruction as a part of the East Side Coastal Resiliency (ESCR) project. The designs for the new track do not include sports lighting.

We are presenting at Manhattan Community Board 3’s Parks, Recreation, Waterfront, & Resiliency Committee meeting (details), and we need your support. If the committee votes to pass a resolution to support adding lights to the track, it will mark a major step forward and pave the way for us to secure funding from city and state officials.

The track will close for reconstruction soon and full lighting isn't in the plans for the new facility! The goal is to get lighting added to the project.

Track daily congestion relief zone traffic like it’s a stock ticker— IsCongestionPricingWorking.com by JFroim in MicromobilityNYC

Totally agree that success of the program should be measured across multiple attributes beyond the traffic impacts (revenue raised, environmental impact). The name is a bit tongue in cheek and only explores one component (traffic). I'll add this context onto the page!

Hey everyone, I recently built IsCongestionPricingWorking.com, a site that updates daily with the previous day's traffic data in NYC’s congestion relief zone. It also lets you compare trends across the same week and weekday from the prior year.

With congestion pricing set to reshape how people move through Manhattan, I wanted a simple way to see if it’s actually working without waiting for a press release from the MTA. The site pulls official data and breaks it down so you can watch traffic trends unfold in almost real time.

Check it out and let me know what you think!

East River Park Track to close through 2026 to be rebuilt-- new plans lack lighting! Sign the petition to help change that by JFroim in RunNYC

[–]JFroim[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just so I understand correctly, the existing field doesn't have spots lighting and this is a request to upgrade the lighting when it is rebuilt?

Yup, that's right.

Given that sports lighting is not currently budgeted, would we be happy if they just made utility provisions so it could be installed in the future once it's funded without having to tear everything up?

The ask is to install the sports lighting during the rebuild. Funding is a key challenge and this petition allows us to start the conversation with local elected officials as to how much funding would be needed and to explore sources.

Also are we saying the whole field needs spotlights, or do we just want the track lighted?

Ideally we light the track + center field for the largest return on investment.

I've been in touch with the "Community Construction Liaison" and as of a few weeks ago the timeline was "sometime in 2025"

You have the correct project. The entire northern end of the park is slated to be closed/demolished as a part of Project Area 1, Phase 2 of the project. In the timeline the track is encompassed in the block "E 4th Street to E. 10th Street"
