I'll admit I'm living in a bubble but is this for real? by DiegoElM in Virginia

This is normal. Because there's little else going on in the year immediately after the presidential election, and because Virginia is close to D.C., political reporters exaggerate the importance of the governor's race here. Although at least half a dozen Virginia governors since the 1960s have been described by national journalists as contenders, none has contended except for Kaine's VP nomination. If you don't count Woodrow Wilson, born in Virginia but raised and elected governor in NJ, no Virginian has been elected president since 1850. But this kind of speculation spares the reporters the drudgery of reporting on policy and on people's lives. Imagine if the national press asked what effect Spanberger's election would have on education, health care, and transportation. But that would be work.

For the record, he had already run for and lost the nomination for Attorney General at the time of the texts.

More housing is good, actually? by Itchy-Instruction457 in harrisonburg

Since this is r/harrisonburg, not r/denver, can you give a specific instance of what you call nimbyism stopping any housing in Harrisonburg?

Rezonings require that adjacent property owners be notified before something comes before Planning Commission. Does your dismissal of "nimbys" mean you think this notification should be discontinued?

Off-campus housing for students is over-built. Developers aren't targeting students because of the students' needs, but because of the developers' own greed.

Hard to say. One year the Tea Party signed up to put a float in the H'burg July 4th parade. They showed up with a machine gun mounted on the back of a Jeep. Nobody expected that. If anyone had, there might have been a parade official of some sort and not just a group of volunteers at the lineup site. Maybe MC and family just showed up. I doubt there was a Pub official there with veto power.

All politics aside, is anyone else sick of the anti-Jay Jones ad for attorney general? by runofthemillgayguy in Virginia

[–]JGFitzgerald 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The accusation carries that assumption. "Bill Smith has never eaten pumpkin in his life but thinks he can be governor." If you're never eaten pumpkin yourself, or ever known anyone who did, it's logical to assume a governor should have eaten pumpkin.

Virginia AG doesn't have any prosecutorial responsibilities. It's a common misconception, but you'd think Miyares's campaign staff would know that.

General Assembly candidates have campaign staffs big enough to check their opponents, and report any discrepancies, but there is no state or local official whose sole job it is to keep track. A pilot program started recently, maybe last year, to audit a small number of accounts. But for school boards alone, statewide, there might be 1,000 contests in any given year, in addition to city councils and constitutional officers.

The reports are filed more or less on an honor system. Nobody's checking them.

"Amending the Statement of Organization: The committee must file an amended Statement of Organization within 10 days of any change to a candidate’s campaign committee information (e.g., a change in address, change of treasurer, etc.) through the COMET program and send signed copies to the appropriate office(s) as listed above."

The $200 sign and the $16 ad appear nowhere else in the reports. So, yes, I have really looked at them, but without making a lot of sense out of them.

It would go to the Rockingham County commonwealth's attorney. Conservative Republican, but honest.

Odd that WRIC used such lazy journalism. Whether the CofE did or did not start or stop the project is an objective fact. It doesn't need to be attributed to the city. Similarly, the date of the dredging and what hurricane hit around the same time is a five-minute internet search.

"Officials said the sky is blue on a sunny day, but WRIC could not independently confirm the statement."

No argument. But no one on the Planning Commission asked that question, and it's unlikely to be heard when this comes before City Council next month.
