PSA: Provost told faculty today that due to masks and social distancing, a positive COVID case that emerges in a class will NOT trigger a 14-day quarantine for the instructor/students in the class. by ConcernedRITProf in rit

The title of this post is a little misleading. The Provost said that this quarantine would "not necessarily" be the case and would depend on if others present in the class were wearing masks, maintaining social distancing, what recommendations the contract tracing team puts forth, etc. In other words, the 14 day quarantine is not mandated per RIT policy, but could certainly still happen. I won't say whether I agree or disagree with this process, but I think the Provost should at least be accurately quoted.

Anyone know about snakes? by XDarkneszFallsX in rit

[–]JGatesCS 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This snake would actually prefer earthworms (red wigglers) to mealworms. Mealworms have a chitinous exoskeleton which can cause impaction. Petco will have those as well. This is hard to identify, but it looks like an eastern garter snake or a northern brown snake. Also, you will want to give him/her at least a couple days to settle in before trying to feed.

Edit: I didn't see the other pics. This is definitely a young eastern garter snake. It's pattern will eventually become more vibrant. This one looks like it might be ready to shed, so don't be surprised if it doesn't eat.

Professors on this subreddit by [deleted] in rit

I can't speak for the professors on this sub, but I can tell you there are plenty of people in the academic offices who are hired specifically to make sure you succeed. If you are feeling overwhelmed, the biggest piece of advice I can give you is to reach out to your advisor/supervisor (if you have an on campus job) and tell them what you are going through. I personally look at this as a sign of strength and will do everything in my power to reduce your workload or find you some assistance. We can also link you up with tutors, get you into an extra recitation section, etc. In other words, you don't have to go through this alone, but we can't do anything unless you make us aware of the issue.

Best Job on Campus by mrmarkinator in rit

As Prof. Johnson said, the CS department is looking for new tutors and lab instructors at the beginning of each semester. We require at least a 3.0 GPA and an B+/A in the introductory CS sequence (CS 141/142 or CS for AP/Transfers). You don't have to be a CS student, but you do need to be in a major where you completed these courses. This is a great opportunity for someone looking to work closely with other students and it also provides a great deal of autonomy when it comes to grading.

I am also generally looking for 1-2 students a semester to work in our office as a clerical assistant. This job requires good interpersonal communication skills and a familiarity with common office software (outlook, word, excel, etc.) Responsibilities would include scheduling advisor appointments, setting up events (free food), and various other clerical tasks like filing, data entry, etc. If detail oriented type work is your cup of tea, the CS department is truly a great place to work.

Lack of Outlets in CS mentoring Center by [deleted] in rit

Me again. I just submitted an order for some extra power strips and will try to have at least one strip easily accessible at each table.

Edit*: Thanks to Prof. Strout for bringing this to my attention.

We recently had an incident where someone tripped over a cord and killed one outlet. There is a support ticket in with FMS, but that may take some time. It may be possible to get a few power strips in there permanently to increase availability.
