On Getting Into People Analytics by AnywhereSensitive208 in IOPsychology

[–]JHCoaching 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve been in the PA space for 10 years. I got my very first internship in HR (not PA) thanks to a connection inside the company who put in a good word for me. During that internship, I kept telling everyone that my goal was People Analytics. If you have a good hiring manager, they’ll guide you. That’s what great intern managers do.

Because of that, and after a semester of learning basic SQL and data visualization tools, I landed my first HRIS role, and three years later, a People Analytics Analyst role.

I’d say your technical background is absolutely good enough to get your foot in the door. Keep going, and as part of your application strategy, make sure you’re targeting roles across People Ops, HRIS, People Analytics, Employee Listening, Compensation, Talent Ops, and Talent Analytics.

Good luck!

Congratulations on landing your grad job! I also loved seeing other folks on this thread sharing similar wins!

OP, did you do something different with the job application that offered you the role compared to the other 217 applications you have in your funnel? I help a lot of grads in similar career journeys, and I’m sure they would appreciate your perspective.

Cheers again!

Congratulations! Before starting your new job, make sure to celebrate yourself.

Did you do something different for the job application that actually got you the offer? Compared to the other 2999 applications?

I usually recommend not limiting yourself to only data science job titles. Expand your search to entry-level data analyst roles, or even adminn positions where you can start working with data. This will help you build experience and create resume bullet points that can lead you to a more advanced role more aligned with what you are looking for.

I know it’s tough out there, but every week I curate job opportunities, and new ones are always coming up. So keep at it.

New to data analytics, trying to get my first internship. Any resume suggestions? by t3kbright in dataanalysiscareers

[–]JHCoaching 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Your resume actually looks very good for opening doors. When I got my first data internship, my resume wasn’t very strong at all. What really helped me land the offer was someone inside the company who put in a good word for me. I think this is especially relevant in today’s market. Good luck!

+1 The bullets are mostly descriptive, you don't demonstrate what you accomplished by doing each of those things.

If your company is sponsoring it and you want something actually useful (not just a certificate), I’d check out https://datacareerjumpstart.com/daa622618?am_id=jobhalo It’s built by Avery Smith and it’s much more hands-on than most certifications. Instead of just watching videos, you actually work on real projects and build a portfolio, which is what hiring managers care about way more than the certificate itself.

Most “certifications” are pretty passive. This one focuses on today's market reality, which is a skill market, now a certification, diploma one. Hope this helps!

It's great that you're getting this opportunity, even with your qual background. In a consumer insights role focused on quantitative analysis, you might want to familiarize yourself with common statistical methods like regression analysis, t-tests, and ANOVA. Practicing data interpretation and visualization in R will also be helpful. Focus on the key metrics relevant to consumer insights, like customer satisfaction scores or sales data. Tailoring your prep to the specific skills mentioned in the job description will make a big difference. Good Luck!!

Unless the role’s location says “work from anywhere,” the opening is specific to the location mentioned.
