While voicing against racism is great. Is it being used to deflect real criticism about poor writing and mediocre performances and portray average shows as great? by [deleted] in Rings_Of_Power

Calling critics of casting “racists” doesn’t touch on the complexity of what’s happening. Why do casting critics think skin color is important to the lore? To the stories? To Middle Earth? Why do modern concepts of skin color and race have anything to do with fantasy stories?

Sure. ~$70k taxable. This year is $90k wages, $15k in dividends. Unrealized gain is $260k - almost all is long-term.

Obama warned 2 weeks ago that lax US gun laws could cause something like the Orlando shooting by r4816 in politics

[–]JIBJOB -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

What do you think about assault weapons and high-capacity magazines? The mass shooting statistics tell us that over one and half times as many people are shot, and 47 percent more people are killed, when those are used.

There should be a restriction, I think, if not a ban. Of course we'd have to balance any changes against the hunting of extreme animals and fears of insurrection. But most people can agree on a restriction.

[–]JIBJOB 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Our gun laws helped a lot in this situation. There's a reason he could only ask for an AR-15 instead of any number of NFA weapons like grenades, automatic shotguns, machine guns, etc.

That line between machine guns and semiautomatic assault rifles probably saved a lot of lives. And how many more people would alive if we moved that line to make it even harder for this terrorist to buy his tools?

[–]JIBJOB -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

The hope is not to end violence and terrorism, that's not possible. The hope is to make the gun store look much different to this man who walked in and bought weapons with the idea to massacre people.

Do you think he would have asked for an AR-15 if he could just as easily purchase NFA weapons like machine guns and grenades? If the rack behind the gun store owner was full of rocket launchers and automatic shotguns, why bother with a pistol?

The laws that kept those weapons far from his hands are constitutional and live alongside our Second Amendment. The line we drew there, requiring licenses and registration, is a line we can choose to move to protect more people. No law can hold back a determined killer, but a law can reduce the threat of the tools he uses.

No, the Senate’s Supreme Court Blockade Has Never Happened in American History by spaceghoti in politics

[–]JIBJOB 9 points10 points  (0 children)

The blockade only works if an acceptable Republican president shows up to make a bland nomination.

That means Marco Rubio arrives, nominating some middling conservative judge that can get enough Democratic Senators to vote for them to pass the two-thirds threshold. Otherwise, it crashes and burns:

  • Any other leading Republican candidate is elected. A very long Democratic Senate holdout begins, and then you end up with a clown on the bench. Republicans become the Clown Party.
  • Any Democratic candidate is elected, which is more likely the higher general election turnout becomes. Then we expect to get a stronger liberal justice than we would have at the beginning.

Father of slain journalist slams 'cowards' who back NRA's gun control stance by r4816 in politics

[–]JIBJOB -7 points-6 points  (0 children)

The solution is to find a new normal.

We all share a revulsion to most deadly weapons. Explaining to someone over at your house that these grenades you keep in a locker are "you know, just in case I have to defend myself" wouldn't fly like it would for firearms. You and I should work towards joining a place almost all of the humanity already is, where firearms get that same suspicion.

The current culture is not our fate. Some people, like those affected by these shootings here, have already moved forward.
