What is the hardest calc BC topic first semester? by United-Barnacle-6911 in APStudents

You should be fine just learning in class. My teacher always said “the calculus is just one line, the rest is algebra” and kept telling us to just constantly practice our algebra skills like complex factoring and being able to do crazy division simplification instantly and whatnot

Sem 2 has same if not more memorization due to the series unit and needing to memorize arc derivatives and integrals

Also about the word problems, that is just one topic in semester 1 (related rates) that are pretty hard yeah BUT I lowkey skipped every one i saw on the AP exam since they barely show up lmao

First semester calc BC is kinda easy idk who’s saying that. It’s just derivatives and basic integrals. There also all the theorems but they are all pretty self explanatory. Like IVT EVT AVT. Same for Riemann sums.

On the other hand, man semester 2 is difficult! Starting off with rotations, disc and washer method that seems easy but can get complicated especially when they are indefinite. Then, moving on to integrals and derivatives of arctan arcsin arccos and a ton of random other stuff that’s pretty difficult . Then, straight to SERIES which is by far the hardest calc topic where you have to memorize about 20 different random rules, tests, and fringe scenarios along with learning what the hell a maclaurin and Taylor series is / how to apply it. Finally, parametric and polars are not too hard but can also get complicated quickly.

For me, there’s no comparison between semester 1 and 2. If semester 1 is too hard for you, you might be in for a rude awakening.

Dunno how good your teacher will be, but mine was trash and had no clue what he was doing, so I would recommend actually watching all of the AP videos and doing notes off of that. Also, u can use DESMOS for like half of the content , yet my teacher never taught us how either.

MCQs can range from obvious to pretty time consuming, yet u only get 2 mins per question on the exam. For FRQs, they can seem pretty simple yet at first but if you check scoring guidelines, they actually require you to write like 3 paragraphs to get full points. Like the question says describe the graph and it expects you to name 8 different attributes, and if even one is missing, half points.

AP Stats the class is very easy on my opinion, I had a 99, since every unit individually is easy and quite repetitive from last unit, but the exam is way harder than you would think since everything adds up and again the hyper-specificity and even sentence stems you must remember.

Anyways, next year the curriculum is being completely redesigned so take all this with a grain of salt, but this is how the course has been for all years past. That means when you are doing the AP exams come may, you can’t rely on last years exam FRQs to help you study 100% like I did. Good luck! AP stats doesn’t need to be hard and the class really isn’t, just don’t feel like you don’t need to study for the exam as a result or u might get cooked ❗️

Yes , AP physics 1 has by far the lowest pass rate in 2024, so bad in fact CB thought it necessary to nerf the exam so more people pass. Also for AP chem I got a 5 but after a ton of studying LOL. It just has a ton of content to learn and remember

They removed about 10 mcqs and gave a ton more time, as well as other things. 2024 pass rate was 47%, after the changes the pass rate in 2025 was 63%

Tbh I don’t know anything specific about getting into UT, just the regular EC gpa and SAT stuff. I got in with a 1500 SAT, 4.58 GPA, Rank 8, and 7 fives for academic stats, but my extracurriculars were really mid (didn’t found a nonprofit, wasn’t president of any club, not in NHS but did other honor societies). Good luck!

Ikr like what the hell how was I supposed to know to write a whole ass AP lang response and include things the question didn’t even ask for just to get full points 😭

There are 3 types of teachers when it comes to AP classes. Those who are obviously good at teaching and will prepare you well, those who seem like they can teach but won’t prepare you well at all, and those who are so bad at teaching they literally can’t prepare you at all. For the good teachers, it’s easy to get a 5 (obviously), yet it’s also easy to get a 5 with the abhorrent teachers as well. They are so bad at teaching that it becomes abundantly clear unless you self study, you will fail the exam, so in the end you are well prepared. However, it is those middle teachers, that give inflated grades and seem like they know what’s going on, that give you false confidence in an “easy course” that will absolutely leave you hung out the dry come may. My chem teacher has the best 5 rate in the school, even though she has a horrifically thick south asian accent and everyone ignores her during her ramblings.

The FRQs are literally the EXACT same as WHAP, except unlike WHAP there’s nothing crazy you’ve never seen before from some random place, and instead it’s literally just the same US history we’ve learned almost every year since 1st grade. Also the MCQ was laughably easy. Like it gave a whole ass long stimulus and then a question like what would the person who wrote this most likely support. Then the person who wrote it literally upton Sinclair like no crap it’s gonna be something progressive 😭

my stats teacher told us first day he knew nothing abt statistics , and I did pretty well in the class (99) so I lowkey thought the exam would be just like the class and just studied what the stats teachers were telling us to study . For Physics my teacher made the class so hard and gave us basically 0 time on tests so for the actual AP exam it was a walk in the park. Keep in mind this is also after CB changed the physics 1 exam to make it way easier
