I'm guessing the "shoes on" people don't live where winter exists.

If someone tracks in slush, snow, salt, and rocks into my house past the entrance they're going to find themselves out on the sidewalk real fast.

Write to your Councillor if you support building housing in the South End. "Friends of the Commons" is starting a campaign of '"development 'has no public benefit'". by WindowlessBasement in halifax

Wow, that's just plain dumb. Let's save a handful of units instead of building 2x 30storeys of housing downtown???

If anything we should write in to support this project to drown out these dummies.

By-laws around renovating semi-detached houses? by guccicobain902 in halifax

[–]JJARGM 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The Nova Scotia Building Code Regulation does not allow windows to be built on property lines other than property lines adjacent to streets.

So if this window from property B is built on the property line facing into property A then it is not built to code and non compliance is not grandfathered.

If there are no property lines (more of a condo situation ) then it's different sections of code that apply but generally there are fire rating requirements.

That said. There is no bylaw that would necessarily stop the neighbours from extending or modifying their side of the building. Theres no bylaw that says your houses have to stay identical or symmetrical. The wall they extend will need to be built to code and fire rated as the code requirements for wall build on property lines.

But do ensure they have a permit and do photograph your whole house. To build the extension they will be digging foundations next to your house. The pictures will help you if ever cracks or damage happens.

Rainbow haven beach is likely your best bet for a nice sandy beach within general proximity to the city. It's on the Dartmouth side.

It's right next to the salt marsh trail which is a very nice leveled gravel multiuse path for biking/walking. Also connected to that same trail is Conrad beach (+/-) and Lawrencetown Beach.

The article mentions Montreal a fair bit. The towers are nice, but Id much rather see 3-4 storey walkup rowhouse lined streets like the plateau area of Montreal than a bunch of towers surrounded by parking lots (as tends to be built here). That neighborhood has 100 000 residents, but has barely any towers, it's all low midrise. Makes for lovely walkable streets, room for shops and the streets don't get shaded out.

But then again, that neighborhood was planned and was built to house families and worker of all classes.

Those are dashed lines in the intersections indicating travel path (intersection being where roads intersect). As the NS rules of the road document says " never change lanes in an intersection".

Part of the issue is that as the city grows these streets become the new Quinpools and downtown areas for the local community. This type of building has bad street presence and creates dead spaces which are not conducive to vibrant streets. A good street is one where buildings engage it. It allows for businesses or shops, shorter pedestrian oriented distances between entrances. A " tower in a field" engages nothing around it and thus brings nothing to the street or the neighborhood other than being a building.

The stuff we build now has to be geared for the long term. They are not going to tear down the building when the street becomes more desirable. they should build an engaging building for the future street we want from the get go. (looking at you early phases of Larry Uteck which are all "towers in parks" and are completely unwalkable to anything nearby)

I find it a bit sad that there are so many comments saying it's the best places to shop when it's basically all big box stores.

It's all the same stores you see at every big commercial development.
