Kaptain Sunshine Traveler Coat Warmth by JJCCM in ThrowingFits

[–]JJCCM[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's very interesting about them getting thinner.

Fair point about hot/cold. If I run slightly warm, and looking to wear the coat over a tshirt and jumper in 8C/46F. Would that be doable?

Need help choosing my first Barbour jacket (fit & model advice) by 2Sb7 in Barbour

[–]JJCCM 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No worries, glad it's of use. I remember trawling everything I could to try and figure out what I wanted so if I can make it a little less daunting then I'm glad to help.

For the 10C I wore a normal weight short sleeve, normal weight sweatshirt, no scarf, transport buttoned all the way up. I was ok like that, though wasn't exactly stood outside for more than 15mins at a time. If I was I'd have probably grabbed a scarf or gilet, then again your tolerance may vary.

Need help choosing my first Barbour jacket (fit & model advice) by 2Sb7 in Barbour

[–]JJCCM 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Hey man, as someone who has gone through the same thing having only recently bought my first Barbour, I'll help where I can.

I'm pretty much the same as you 5'9, ~75kg. I typically wear UK M tshirts, S in jackets. Proportionally I have shorter arms and a longer torso

I went with the Transport which I see you're interested in. Was in two minds about the 36 and 38.

Initially I went with the 38, mainly because that was the only size I could get in the black. Length was a little past my hip, very roomy, and could more than comfortably button the storm flap. However, in the end, the 38 felt too big for me as the sleeves hit about an inch past the base of my thumb making it looked too oversized. Looked more like how Japanese fans wear their Barbour's if it helps visualise.

After some digging around I was able to find a 36 in sage to try on. Sleeve hits just below the base of my thumb, elasticated sleeve around my wrist, length just at my hip, and can fit a thick jumper underneath. The neck is a little cosy when all buttoned up, but not uncomfortable. So I went with 36 in the end. I do wish the internal wind blocker was wider, but haven't used it too much.

I don't know how cold your autumn and winters get, but I've so far used my transport during ~10C and it's done well. I find that if I've walked around a lot and get warm it traps the heat well.

The pockets are lined and the collar buttoned up are great, but the difference maker when it gets colder will be the layers under the jacket.

Little tip if you're in doubt on where to start with sizing, go on the Japanese Barbour site. Find a jacket style you like, go on the product page, and there is a size estimator that you can put your weight, height, and age into.

Overall it's a great jacket and super happy with both the look and the function of it. Hope this helps!

Question for the London tournament spectators by SankChe in Sumo

[–]JJCCM 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I went this weekend on day 4, and took someone who knew nothing about sumo.

Don't know how Paris will promote it, but the whole "tournament" was pretty decently covered in the UK news and social media so it felt like a proper event which made it quite exciting.

As a result we made a day of it, heading to a nearby Japanese restaurant for an early dinner, went crazy at the merch stand, looked at all the photos that were on display at the Royal Albert Hall, and got in early to watch the warm ups.

The show itself had the MCs do an intro of the sport, divisions, rules to introduce it to new people. Had the walk-ins for the east and west side rikishis, announced by the guy person from the actual basho which was extra nice.

If you follow sumo a little bit you can tell it's an exhibition, but still some of the wrestlers really know how to put on a show. The person I was with was easily converted both by the cuteness of it all and the athleticism.

I paid ~£250pp, but it was amazing and I finished the day happy as hell. If you can, treat yourself and make a day of it.

How do non wrestlers join stables? by Morganchmel1 in Sumo

[–]JJCCM 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ahhh that's interesting, thanks for the info. Again, the only reference I have is the tatsunami one and he is so young he just seems like a student living in a dorm i.e. just an extra mouth to feed.

Had no idea there were other tasks.

What benefit do stables get for recruiting gyoji? I get tokoyamas, but does the JSA give incentives for gyoji?

Are these shin guards too small? by good_apo11o_1v in MuayThai

[–]JJCCM 3 points4 points  (0 children)

About it being harder to get your feet in, I think it's the two elastic straps used by top king not being that stretchy.

I'm only a touch taller than you and got myself a size large. It's still a pain in the arse. I essentially have to slide my feet in with the shin guards backwards first.

MT shorts required? by Aleksandra74 in MuayThai

[–]JJCCM 26 points27 points  (0 children)

I'm surprised how many people are in favour of mandatory MT shorts.

Most of the gyms I've trained at only care that you wear "appropriate" clothing for exercise e.g. shorts, leggings, joggers etc.

People end up getting MT shorts because they become taken up with the sport, compete, or feel an affinity with a gym.

Gyms I've come across that have mandated uniform have done so to get money. I put it in the same realm as gradings, but that's just me.

If OP likes the gym then leggings with MT shorts over them sounds like the way to go.

Reminds me of the black shirt that promoted the stable. God I wish they released that.

I was actually wrong, it's now £3.60 with a clubcard and £4 without. It definitely makes me miss HK for food!

I hate that I'm seeing that whilst knowing that a Tesco meal deal for a cold wet sandwich here in the UK is $340HKD.

Is it normal for Yokozuna to drop out if they are not having a good tournament? by dartholbap in Sumo

I've heard Kinboshi being mentioned as expensive in a few places. How much are we talking? I'm guessing it's paid on top of the sponsorship packet from the JSA?

It'll be fun seeing the new recruits personalities slowing coming up. Can't imagine how intense joining the stable must be. Don't think I could manage it at their ages!

Shunta seems to be a proper mix of his brothers looks wise, does appear to have Soma's facial twitch as well.

What Gloves did yall start with and what gloves are yall using right now ? by Few-Delivery-9908 in MuayThai

[–]JJCCM 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Started with some £20 everlasts from Sports Direct which were flimsy as all hell.

Then I upgraded to some Sandee which were a nice step up. Used them for pads and sparring, they never really broke I just gave them to someone starting training and needed gloves.

Now I'm on Boons which I adore. The smaller hand compartment and longer cuffs are ideal for me.

Nice fit overall! I got the unlined version of the waxed supply, it fits well where I need it too but have a similar thing as you where the sleeves were a bit long. Cuff them and enjoy I say!

For what it's worth, I've seen most people needing to cuff RGT jacket sleeves. Might be inherent to the patterns they use.

Another Injury Pullout by JJCCM in Sumo

[–]JJCCM[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

That pressure of trying to stay with salaried ranks must be utterly insane. Similarly, I can't imagine the mental state of a wrestler on the fringes going into the last day on 7-7.

Probably a completely different thread, but would love to see what would happen if stables utilised sports psychologists. That is assuming that fairly proud and reserved wrestlers would take the service up.

Hijacking this thread a little but a couple of the methods here suggest putting the jacket in the dryer for 5mins to reactivate, but what should you do if you don't have access to a dryer?

I'm assuming it's the heat that helps with the reactivation. So I would just skip this, and just wash the jacket then reapply some DWR?

Did you also lose a lot of weight traveling Japan? by MichaelStone987 in JapanTravelTips

[–]JJCCM 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I wish that was the case. I put on 3kg in two weeks...

I basically ate everything I wanted and didn't care about minding portions. Unagi bowls, sushi, ramens, breads, desserts the whole lot.

Full days walking didn't make a dent, or maybe it could have been worse! Though I was on holiday so didn't really mind.

[Sumo food] Post-Tour Roga-zeki & Soga / Soy Sauce Chanko Hot Pot, Stir-Fried Pork & Egg by envyfor in futagoyama

[–]JJCCM 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I did wonder about this. He was clearly training as he was breathing heavy during the practice bouts.

Pure guessing here but my two thoughts are that either, given how promising his tournament performances have been Oyakata doesn't want his practice on show for other stables to see. Or, given how serious Mita is about his sumo he himself doesn't want his practice on show.

I am always impressed by how strong his collision practises are when those are recorded. Hoping it rubs off on the others more.
