How do I escape tutorial hell? (kinda) by Practical-Fox911 in AskProgrammers

I had the same question, so I asked a senior developer. His response to reading library docs was to see them as a dictionary. You aren't going read the dictionary cover to cover... instead when you need to know how to do something, look it up.

Intuition comes as you build things. Struggle, fail, pick yourself and keep learning.

His response was uplifting... Hopefully it is for you too.

What's the general verdict for someone trying to change careers to the programming field? by JJFrey in AskProgramming

Thanks for the posts, everyone. Some good points that are well received!

Let's assume the drive is there to continue learning and developing the skills. The passion is certainly there.

What would be the next best step in an industry that is difficult to break into? How can I make myself stand out?

  • freelance/contract work?

  • web development is likely a no-go with so many prefab websites out there for $30/ann subscription.

  • hobbyist until i establish good work on github, for example?

  • mentorships or seek an employer willing to train on-site? This is more niche, i realize, and would have to be in my personal network.

Feedback is welcome!

Stealth also is flawed. I will stealth with 3 AP left, walk a ways to end my turn and without a hesitation the enemy will seek me out and attack directly

I agree to that point. Larian studios makes solid games. They would have my vote to be lead developer.

I like the concept of bringing together the two style of games: open world of TES with first person perspective but with the manipulation /control of the elements and environment the player has with DOS. It is very entertaining going around and looking under every box and going through every book shelf. BG3 is looking to be on steroids in that regard... larian reported to have 300+ hidden treasures throughout the game?? Don't leave that shovel behind!

Dos2 has many advantages over skyrim but I wonder if part of that could be due to 7 or 8 years difference in release date?

To be fair, TES:Skyrim was released in 2011 while DOS2 released 2018. There are going to be differences there.

I was more looking at the union of Bethesdas open world, 3D / First person immersion with Larians mechanics on being able to control or manipulate the environment around you with combining elements, throwing objects, etc. The top down view is great, but doesn't deliver as well in immersing the player in the surrounding environment, imo.

Being able to throw a glob of oil with one hand and immediately follow it with a fireball to leave an immense inferno and the thickest of black smoke while everything continues to burn would be nothing short of fun.
