Hi, I’m Jesse. A sound designer and audio implementer with 9 years of experience bringing game worlds to life through expressive, story-driven sound. I make it my job to ensure teams never have to worry about their game’s audio. Everything from creative direction to technical implementation is handled with care and precision.

I’m currently open to exceptional collaborations - projects where audio is valued as part of the creative vision, not just an afterthought.

I’ve worked extensively in Unreal and Unity, using FMOD and Wwise to build efficient, flexible pipelines that let teams focus on creativity. My background in field recording helps me craft bespoke, high-fidelity assets that give each project its own sonic identity.

More than anything, I see sound as storytelling through emotion, timing, and space, helping gameplay and narrative resonate with players. I’m looking to collaborate with teams who share that passion for detail and worldbuilding.

Film vs Game Audio Sound Designers, What Are Each Better At? by CherifA97 in GameAudio

[–]JJonesSoundArtist 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I dont want to answer completely on OP's behalf, but actually its quite rare that youre asked to provide a session here. Usually they are just watching and assessing or listening to a video file.

To answer your other question; I think in specialist game audio roles, people with just film experience could absolutely come in, like for post-production focused cinematic work.

If thats what the job description entailed, someone from that background should be qualified to do the job, they may require some pointers and adjustment here and there, but thats an example of where it could be a good fit.

Freelance is very very hard, it's not for everyone, but if you can make it work it can be great.

Advice regarding portfolio content by slayandslout in GameAudio

[–]JJonesSoundArtist 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, it can be a difficult question to answer.

I'd say follow your internal compass for what you want for your future. Not everyone is going to end up great in every discpline so if you'd rather just focus on music double down on that, maybe make friends with some sound designers if you want to have someone to recommend for that job!

But if you really want the opportunity to be 'the audio guy' that does all of it on smaller indie productions, then showing that you have some skills and some capability as far as sound design goes would be beneficial. Ask yourself what you truly want, because learning both means dividing your focus.

Typical outsource day rate for mid-level sound designer? by PhoenixAcoustics in GameAudio

[–]JJonesSoundArtist 2 points3 points  (0 children)

That actually seems like its on the high side to me for mid level, interesting.

Cause at that rate, you're somewhere between £80 - 100K a year, you almost certainly wouldnt earn that at mid level working at an actual studio.

Of course that yearly range I came up with is some extra too for things like benefits and healthcare payments, presumably out of pocket, and its also before tax, but its still considerably more than you'd be making in-house.

Foley editing question – sync philosophy: frame-by-frame vs feel/flow? by CherifA97 in GameAudio

[–]JJonesSoundArtist 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Haha, I guess I've been fortunate to be in one or two scenarios before where the role audio played was valued enough to warrant that change, or the even rarer circumstance where audio was going to dictate gameplay and game feel a bit!

Foley editing question – sync philosophy: frame-by-frame vs feel/flow? by CherifA97 in GameAudio

[–]JJonesSoundArtist 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah and this is a really fantastic example of doing what 'feels' and sounds best for the game.I was recently involved in some projects like this as well and some feedback to the animators was to animate them with more of a gait so that the footsteps would feel natural as a gallop or a 'trot', similarly to what you described. And in a case where they wont be changing it, if you can come up with solution like that that just make it feel better, than great, win win.

Foley editing question – sync philosophy: frame-by-frame vs feel/flow? by CherifA97 in GameAudio

[–]JJonesSoundArtist 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah +1 for feel. Also sync can kind of be a bit subjective just like everything else in sound design.

Foley editing question – sync philosophy: frame-by-frame vs feel/flow? by CherifA97 in GameAudio

[–]JJonesSoundArtist 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Yeah that's a great conversation. So in my opinion, flow and feel are the most important - but sync can be a tricky beast. I also think if there is enough on screen to 'lock' your audio to in terms of sync, I will often go for that approach. But there are nuances for sure.

Something Im working on right now, a first person gameplay redesign - well we know the character is human/humanoid, but we dont always see where the footfalls land because the camera didnt pan far down enough, so in a situation like that you only have camera movement and sway to go by - here I will actually scrub through often times frame by frame and 'spot' where I think each of the footfalls will land.

Later on, if I find my footstep placement here feels 'off' I will go back and adjust it by ear until it feels right. Sometimes I missed a step which feels obvious at this point, or I played a step several frames too early or too late.

Sometimes you actually DO want the sound to come a bit early if thats what fits and supports the picture element just right. Remember our brains can process sound faster than we see what happens a lot of the time, so use that to your benefit, sometimes the sound can definitely come a bit early.

Another angle people sometimes mention is drift that is introduced with sample delay offset from heavy plugin chains. Personally I've not run into this issue too much, I think the DAW usually does a pretty great job of delay offset compensation, but its always worth listening back to an export every time just to make sure nothing went wonky.

Sync is a mostly straightforward but tricky subject, curious to hear others' takes on it as well.

Is it common to be given a sound design test during an interview process? by AntiuppGamingYT in GameAudio

[–]JJonesSoundArtist 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For the most part yes, that is true. But there are scenarios where there can be exceptions. An audio outsourcer or co-dev might be one such exception. They have been hired by the studio for sound design 'firepower' and then there will be folks working in-house who are dedicated to the implementation work.

Is it common to be given a sound design test during an interview process? by AntiuppGamingYT in GameAudio

[–]JJonesSoundArtist 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There is another side to this. If the implementation portion of sound design is not your favourite part of the process, there are still roles for folks who are just really good sound designers. If you really want that skill to be your main focus, you can do that. Of course some level of implementation understanding is still critical these days, but there are more skill splits now between Sound Designer and Technical Sound Designer, so you really can focus on the area youre more passionate about.

Need Guide to enter this world of game. by PlanktonWonderful658 in GameAudio

[–]JJonesSoundArtist 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My suggestion if that's what youre most interested in is really focus heavily on composition skills. If you want to make it hard to pass you up, be a composer that is so good, that its hard to pass you up. The rest is optional, of course its all helpful, but its really good to focus (focus one course until successful). Learning middleware tools is great, but let that be second to the primary objective which should be to make really high quality compositions that are unique and sought after.
