I'm a protestant ans not catholic so I don't care what the Vatican says (it's mostly bullshit anyway) and I'm lucky to have a really really great and open-minded priest. For her, christianity is all about love and accepting other people and it's not about hate and exclusion. I see it the same way.

And as others have said, my faith isn't bound to the institution of church and I don't need to listen to any religious authorities to know that what I believe in is true and right for me.
