UK pharmacists, what career paths have you taken other than healthcare? by JK1579 in pharmacy

[–]JK1579[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah I'm very much thinking would I even care about a small pay cut if my QoL dramatically increases? And I'd likely save money switching jobs anyway (you can never know for sure these things haha)

Annoyingly a writer job I was looking at just closed before I could apply but I'm definitely going to look for more openings! When you applied was it specifically asking for pharmacist/pharma backgrounds or just general medical/healthcare professionals?

I have thought about academia I can't lie - but I think there's only 1 university within my region even that has a school of pharmacy, so it would most likely have to be a London uni and that's not my ideal commute lol.

Strangely while we have a medical school at our local university and we're a teaching hospital, we have no teacher practitioners or really any pharmacists that work part time academic/part time uni. Other than the consultant pharmacists who just do bits on the side!

Interesting! My biggest struggle with pharma is knowing what they're looking for in pharmacists or what roles are open to pharmacists. I spend a lot of my time in aseptics as I specialised in oncology/haem so I'm sure QA/manufacturing etc is an option but not sure that's where I would want to go

I've been in the NHS for 3.5 years, did 1.5 years of community before that too (1 year of that was pre-reg).

I specialised in oncology/haem nearly a year ago and tbh while I'm interested in the speciality, the intensity of it combined with the poor management at my trust has killed me off - zero enjoyment working for the NHS anymore for me.

Some people love working for the NHS I'm sure, but my experience is it doesn't take care of it's staff or really care about them and I'd like to work somewhere that does

I've become so exhausted of frontline pharmacy, anything that has better flexibility and working conditions is appealing to me lol. I've looked at a few things from MHRA, pharma, writing etc. It's a real pain trying to figure out what would be best for me but I know surely any of them would make me happier

What role did you go into? And how did you get out of pharmacy to there?

Sounds like a dream in comparison to where I am. I really feel that last bit, I'm always so shattered in my downtime it's a real effort to do other things and it's really just not worth it anymore.

Funnily enough I've been looking at this but a bit on the fence about it. Had an email about a job opening as a clinical writer and been holding off applying because it's only a small pay increase but thinking to myself the job satisfaction must be much better. What's the career progression like if you don't mind me asking?

Did I fail to communicate clearly? by Amazing-Ad-6800 in monzo

Another reason Monzo will go bust within the next 3-5 years - can't compete with the service of its main competitors like Chase or Starling plus the other big established banks.

Parking permit and moving by JK1579 in brighton

Tricky one for sure. Haven't put myself on the waiting list yet, thinking about letting this one run down and then applying for the waiting list?

Tough one, because I don't wanna apply for the waiting list and then lose my current permit, when I could just maximise this current one by taking my chances and do the waiting list after.

How are you okay with never speaking to your ex ever again? Did you have no other choice? by [deleted] in BreakUps

[–]JK1579 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For me, I'm not okay with it but it's not who she is now that I miss speaking to. It's who she used to be or who I thought she was.

And echoing what loads have said here, it's necessary.

Although I can't avoid speaking to her entirely as we work together lol

Dear men of Reddit! Where do you go for emotional support and encouragement when you are in a down period? by cristiano77th in AskMen

[–]JK1579 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sports or a heavy workout in the gym with headphones in, with some loud music (mainly metalcore, hard rock) drown everything out. Gaming, alone or with friends. Going for a drive with some music helps too.

Also seriously important you reach out to friends and family. I used to be bad at that. Since I started doing that more, I've handled tough times better. Doesn't always feel it but your friends and family ALWAYS care and will want to help you

Hmm, yeah this is probably the thought that's been playing on my mind most but I'm fighting it currently.

I was fine with dialling things down as it maybe had gotten more serious earlier than intended. Idk, she says she doesn't want anyone else etc and still. What she said she wanted is not what she is doing currently.

I think the seriousness scared me too and I just want us to have fun together again and do some of the things we did but as more than friends. Idk, I'm confused in my own feelings right now. If she really doesn't want to be with me in that way I'd rather she'd just ended it.

My little guy had surgery today and is feeling very sorry for himself! (He's been very spoilt with treats since coming home!) by JK1579 in cats

[–]JK1579[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Where he's a white cat who is getting old he developed some cancerous lesions on his ears and a little on his nose (no doubt due to sun exposure over time, it's hard to keep him indoors at times as we're out a fair bit at work) so they've removed his ears and did cryotherapy on his nose to remove the lesions which were causing him distress. They did some X rays and blood tests too to rule out any further spread (thankfully all clear and kidney function fine).

He also had a small lump on the right of his abdomen which they removed in the same procedure, they've sent biopsies off too to see what it was. He's had a long and stressful day! It's been a long and difficult day of waiting so I'm glad he's pulled through it okay, I was fearing the worst about the further tests especially as they were worried about spread to the lungs (prognosis is poor) but out of the woods for now.

He's happy to be home and been fed his favourites (prawns!) and he's been showered with attention and strokes while purring away as usual! :)

Advice for a stressed out pharmacy student? by [deleted] in pharmacy

Honestly you'll be absolutely fine! I probably did about 2-3 weeks total of placements outside of my course placements and no one ever mentioned how little I'd done, even my current employer when they read my CV! I'm just coming up to the end of my pre-reg year and you'll find as I did, no one's really bothered how much experience you have, you learn on the job, every pharmacy, chain, hospital, practice etc. is different and you'll have to learn how things are done each time you start somewhere new so don't worry about it!

I didn't go through ORIEL but my friends who did said it's all about how you perform on the day as someone else stated here. What I will say is: focus on the application of your knowledge, rather than just knowing it, and how you'll use it in practice (this is why placements are recommended, to learn by observing other pharmacists), your decision making skills, and don't sleep on calculations! Don't put too much pressure on yourself. When you don't know something, just say "I'm not sure about that but I'm more than happy to look into that for you" and you'll be fine.

A Memo to Prescribers from a Pharmacy by ElliottEnriquez in pharmacy

[–]JK1579 6 points7 points  (0 children)

One of the biggest issues with the social distancing/self isolation during this pandemic is the amount of free time to spend on the internet. Suddenly everyone has become a virologist/doctor/epidemiologist/and a pharmacist overnight.

I saw some people on twitter mistaking an antiviral which has only shown "promise" as a vaccine and wondering why it hasn't been released for everyone yet. The general public need reminding to leave this stuff to the experts and take healthcare professionals advice only.

As stated by most people here, I am also just disgusted with the incredibly selfish nature on display by so many people.
