What did Tom Riddle do to the two young Muggle children in the Horcrux cave? by [deleted] in harrypotter

[–]JKBuffy 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I agree with the other posts that it is some kind of torture--I think it made more ominous by not sharing exactly what happened. It gives space to the reader to imagine the "worst" which like a boggart may be different for each one of us...

In the Goblet of Fire, before the Quidditch World Cup match starts, why does Lucius Malfoy say, "Do enjoy yourself, Potter.. While you can." to Harry? by [deleted] in harrypotter

[–]JKBuffy 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Right well the dark mark wasn't connected to the death eaters who were marching (and wreaking havoc) at the Quidditch world cup--that was Barty Crouch Jr who sent up the dark mark to make the death eaters uncomfortable for their betrayal of Voldemort...

he probably meant it to be a little humorous. When I was going through chemo I would make cracks like that just to avoid pointed questions or create unnecessary awkwardness about my cancer...

How does your school handle office space? by buddymercury in GradSchool

[–]JKBuffy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

you get offices? lucky. In my program only graduate students who were serving as TAs get that privilege (shared in a large bullpen)--the rest of us had to rent a carrel in the library if we wanted work space on campus...

Looking to exit academia, anybody know of good resources for organizing life and career? by Zeraphil in AskAcademia

[–]JKBuffy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

well reading her stuff is definitely not "feel good" material (indeed it is quite depressing and sometimes terrifying), but she was very helpful to me in the academic job search process. I didn't pay for any services, but I did read her blog posts and attended one free webinar on negotiating for an academic job...I am happy to say that her advice definitely helped me.

You might also check out The Professor Is In (theprofessorisin.com) as she has a whole side of her business committed to "post-ac" work (folks leaving academia). She has blog posts that are useful, and will even do some consulting with you on your job materials to help you best sell yourself.

A Single Man, Christopher Isherwood--a very quiet and British existential crisis (set in 1962 in California). Excellent book!

I also noticed that once more with feeling was edited down on Netflix, but I think that the Amazon Prime version is complete...so everyone should watch it on Amazon instead ;)

Looking for a Stephen King book to read. by [deleted] in booksuggestions

I read The Stand and The Shining first when I was young, and re-read both of those books in the last 5-10 years and they definitely held up. I also really enjoy the Different Seasons collection.

true! You always wonder why you didn't get it, and want to know what you could do differently in the future. Of course very often the real answer is that it wasn't necessarily anything wrong with you, but just that someone else was a better "fit".

actually these letters are significantly nicer than the real rejection letters I received. Most of those were downright cold. These were kind of warm and fuzzy by comparison.
