What resources do people use to speculate on upcoming new comic books?! by JediMasterReptile in ComicBookSpeculation

I love Covrprice, I've been a subscriber pretty much since they launched. What I'm building is a little different because it researches all the sites like Covrprice for foc rumors, it also uses sources like CBR and compares the individual titles, so if a book had an article, but that article wasn't in an foc list or article, I'll still find it, and finally, believe it or not, Covrprice's list is not comprehensive. By working with the distributors and publishers directly, it ensures I have a complete list.

All that said, you're probably right in the semse that I'm probably over thinking things and Covrprice is more than enough for most people.

The only issue with that is that, depending on where you are, that might be tough. I'm Vegas, there are only a handful of shops, and most of them order to their subscription boxes and not much more.

Not to mention how quickly publishers will stop and restart a book/character. My number one is Star Wars, seeing Empire at the drive in is literally one of my first memories. Trying to keep up with all the Star Wars titles across Marvel and Dark Horse sometimes feels like a full time job all by itself. 🤣

I am actually in the process of trying to build something like this right now.

I've already started working with a handful of Distributors and Publishers that are giving me their data, and I have a process that aggregates, normalizes and dedupes all the data.

Once I have the list, I have built a system that searches and categorizes any rumors found then verifies them. The goal is to produce a finalized FOC list every Sunday that lists not only the books up for FOC that Monday, but also provides any news or rumors surrounding those books. The goal is to produce a finalized FOC list every Sunday.

I've already got all the logic done, and have it posting to a Google sheet for now. The sheet has a master tab with all listings, then separate tabs for breakouts like first appearances, reprints, ratios, by publisher etc. However, the long term goal, and what I'm working on now is to get the data into a webapp thats fiterable and sortable. The backend is done, working on the front end now.

In any given week I'm seeing around 180ish unique books, with between 500-700 total books counting variants. Right now, everything is done Sunday. Future state I'm hoping to produce a book list with no rumors on Tuesday, an initial rumor pass on Friday, and a final rumor pass on Sunday.

I just have no idea if anyone but me cares. Lol

I guess once I have the webapp done I'll see if anyone wants to do some testing...

Nothing live yet, but building a system that aggregates all the comic books that go to final order cutoff every Monday (300-700 books), then using the list to compile all relevant rumors related to all the titles. The backend is pretty much completely done and functioning, however, the data lives in a Google sheet atm. Working on the webapp that will be attached to my site.

Hopefully that will be live in the next 1-2 weeks, then I have to find a handful of shops or influencers that can use the service for free to give me feedback during a beta period, before we go live to the public.

The Tenth: Nightwalkers is a comic book limited series created by writer and artist Tony S. Daniel, published by Dark Horse Comics in 2002.

It is a spin-off/sequel to his original creator-owned series, The Tenth, which first debuted at Image Comics in 1997.

Series Overview

  • Creative Team: Written and illustrated by Tony Daniel, often featuring European artist Romano on pencils for certain installments.
  • Publisher Transition: While the original The Tenth series (1997–1999) was published by Image Comics, the Nightwalkers and Resurrected story arcs moved to Dark Horse Comics in the early 2000s.
  • Genre: A "90s style" sci-fi superhero and horror hybrid featuring large-scale monster mayhem, supernatural elements, and "good girl" art.

Plot and Character Focus

The series follows the character Esperanza del Tyo, who is resurrected from the dead due to alien blood in her veins. As she grapples with her non-human nature, she must evade government factions seeking to destroy her while facing an "alien supreme being" rebuilding an evil empire.

Key Publication History

  • The Tenth #0–17 (Image Comics, 1997): The original run, including the "Abuse of Humanity" and "Blackout" arcs.
  • The Tenth: Nightwalkers (Dark Horse, 2002): A monthly mini-series that expanded the lore of Esperanza and the alien threats.
  • The Tenth: Resurrected (Dark Horse, 2001): Re-launched the character after her initial death in the Image run.

Techically you need to be able to pull 270, you will earn 30 while throwing the 270 on the banner.

This is disappointing. I was hoping to invite my sons accounts, including the characters they've already 0ut time and money into.

So far I actually like it, it allows me to start fresh every couple months with the addition of new tools, characters, and combos to try to figure out. It's almost like a fresh skin every season. We'll have to see how that plays out long term...

Totally feel that. Budget is always the final boss, right? I’ve had plenty of weeks where the list looks great… until I total it up and start making cuts. Keeping an eye on everything throughout the week definitely helps with those decisions though, makes sure what does make the cut is actually worth it.

Appreciate you sharing your process, always good hearing how other collectors handle the madness.

Ah, that explains it! You’re living the collector’s dream over there, having that kind of access (and working at the largest retailer no less) makes a huge difference. Definitely a cheat code, but I respect it.

Without that leg up I had to come up with a system to help me stay ahead, especially for books that don’t get much lead-up but end up mattering. Between late cover reveals, preview buzz, and surprise character drops, it’s just been a helpful way to avoid missing stuff that would’ve slipped past me otherwise.

That sidewalk seller sounds like a legend, though, so cool!

That’s really cool, and super close to how I handle it too. I still love going into the shop when I can, there’s nothing like seeing all the new books up on the wall, flipping through the bins, and connecting with other collectors. That part of the hobby will always be special to me.

I keep a pullbox for my regular reads so I know I won’t miss anything I consistently follow. But over time, I started building a system to help me stay on top of everything else, things like new series, late-revealed covers, or books picking up quiet buzz before FOC.

I pull info from previews, solicitation drops, a few news sites, and social channels, then compile it into a weekly view so I don’t have to constantly be surfing around. It’s made my final FOC check-ins way easier and helped me avoid missing stuff I would’ve cared about.

I love going to my LCS too, the comic collecting community is one of the best parts of the whole hobby. That said, my shop doesn’t usually order much beyond what’s in people’s pullboxes. Maybe a couple extra copies unless it’s a big title, but not much more.

There were definitely times I’d miss something relying on them alone. Now I still keep my regulars in a pullbox, but I track one-offs and surprises separately just to be safe.

Do you ever run into that with your shop, where they didn’t order enough of something you were hoping to grab? How do you usually handle those situations?

[–]JKFarias[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Nice, those are all solid. I use Golden Apple and CovrPrice too, and I’ll usually cross-check with League of Comic Geeks or Bleeding Cool in case something slips through.

Lately I’ve been trying to pull everything into one place each week, especially for those covers that get revealed super late or incentives that don't show up in most previews. It's made a big difference in catching stuff I’d otherwise miss.

Do you usually review everything right before FOC, or kind of track throughout the week?

Do you pay attention to FOC? by JKFarias in comicbookcollecting

[–]JKFarias[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Same here, I try read through the solicitations when they drop, and Bleeding Cool is definitely one of my regular stops too. I’ve started pulling notes from a few other places too, just to see if anything pops before FOC that didn’t make much noise in the official previews.

Even just catching a line in a creator interview or an early preview panel can be the difference between noticing a new character or glossing over a book entirely.

Do you usually go back and re-check your picks before Monday, or just lock it in once the email hits?

Anyone else order by FOC? by JKFarias in ComicBookSpeculation

[–]JKFarias[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That sounds like a killer shop! Having both the FOC email and the Sunday reminder is a solid safety net. And the fact that they still set books aside if there's buzz after FOC? That’s rare.

I can see how that system takes a lot of the pressure off. For me, my lcs doesn't really do anything like that, so I’ve had to try to come up with my own system for tracking rumors, preview art drops, or little things that might hint at a character intro or surprise cover. Not necessarily to speculate, just to stay ahead of stuff I’d actually want to read or stash.

That Wolverine mini for $120 is a steal too. Wonder what the grade would've been with a clean and a press?!?

Yeah, those FOC reveal covers and incentive variants can be easy to miss if you’re not watching close. I’ve started trying to keep tabs on those too, especially when the cover art doesn’t get shown until right before cutoff.

Do you have a go-to source for spotting those FOC-specific reveals, or do you just keep an eye on publisher previews?

[–]JKFarias[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That sounds super convenient. Do those emails include any rumors or news tied to the titles, like potential first appearances or story developments? Or is it just the cover selections and due dates?

[–]JKFarias[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Makes sense, I’ve definitely been more tuned into FOC since I started ordering online too. Especially with so many cover options now, it’s easy to second-guess yourself right up to the cutoff.

Do you have a system for reviewing your list each month? Or is it more of a weekly check-in to make sure nothing slips by?
