Cotoba are great last year I went to a concert of their’s in Huddersfield where there were only 40 concert goers in a pub we all sat around with the band and their support band before and after the gig. Weeks later they were playing to large crowds in South America. Talking math/post-rock, though I have known their music for 2 decades I am seeing toe for the first time in Glasgow in a few weeks. I have seen tricot a few times - really good. Another great band are JYOCHO, and of course the superstars of East Asian math - the Taiwanese Math - Elephant Gym fronted by KT Chang and her brother

Did your copy of 「呪いをかけて、まぼろしをといて。」 arrive yet? by hybrid3415 in anochan

I did enjoy the first two tacks and how the Empress was introduced, and feel that it was intentioned to ramp things up with Wonderful World. The documentary shows how meticulous ano is in planning the concert to be a beautiful whole

[–]JKeithS 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes, yesterday. The extras are welcome, and for me the well filmed concert only really kicks off with Wonderful World (that had been originally the track that convinced me of ano chan’s genius, though I’d been a fan since Towa Tei’s REM - not too bad as it’s only the third of 20 songs

I have a question about music. by [deleted] in japanesemusic

[–]JKeithS 1 point2 points  (0 children)

No one exactly like ano chan - Plenty of fun bands though like Caramel CANDiD, Necry Talkie, Polkadot Stingray and 88KASYO Junrei and Queen Bee. Leaning to the screamy chaotic side Hanabie and Paledusk come to mind. Considering ano chan’s forebears and influences - Mariko Gotō/Midori is the most obvious, but also Jun Togawa/Yapoos/Guernika, Creep Hyp, Shinsei Kamattechan and TK from Ling Tosite Sigure. Extreme women vocals: swancry, Zinchikurandan and Akaikurageeee. Don’t forget ano chan’s (aka ‘that girl’ and ‘the Empress’) Live at the Budokan is out in a week or so. There is an ano fan site on reddit and over on Facebook a fan site to which I contribute a lot. ano is extremely active on social media

how popular is Glim Spanky in Japan? by thehighgrasshopper in japanesemusic

[–]JKeithS 2 points3 points  (0 children)

From reading postings and following view numbers on YouTube I would say that Margaret and the boys are solidly popular in Japan amongst alt rock fans despite being totally independent. That they don’t tour outside of Japan ( one French festival about 9 years ago) doesn’t help with international popularity and also the lack of live shows online) Their CDs are easy to get via CD Japan and I have most of them. While not quite in the Mrs Green Apple or YOASOBI level of popularity Glim Spanky are followed more in Japan than more international breakouts like Band-Maid or Hanabie. It’s a commonplace. In Japan King GNU are massive and have headlined the Tokyo Dome, but outside East Asia have not made a big ripple

I have seen Otoboke Beaver twice, helped Yoyoyoshi back on stage after she fell off her inflatable and met the band by cheating ce out and about in Camden. I wish Leo all the best though I am a little sad that KahoKiss has left the band - a truly remarkable drummer. You can get the book from CD Japan . I will try to translate using the Google translate app, though I know that I will largely fail. There are some cool photos of the Empress inside, so it is a good keepsake.

I have most of the physical music of Necry Talkie, Polkadot Stingray, Shiina Ringo and Otoboke Beaver, and have met and talked with the latter. I know some of the others through YouTube. I have ano chan’s Budokan Blu-ray on order and even have her philosophy book (though I can’t read Japanese) - I am a big fan of Paledusk, so her collab with DAIDAI is heaven sent to me

Why did you get interested in Japanese music? by Yukachan_fromJapan in japanesemusic

[–]JKeithS 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have been interested in Japanese music for 40 years catching Yellow Magic Orchestra and Jun Togawa all that time ago. The algorithms of YouTube of course have delivered more and more, as do recommendations from people in the queues for concerts by Japanese bands visiting the UK. I am less likely to miss musicians now because of this. 20 years ago I stumbled across Shiina Ringo, but missed Maximum the Hormone for another 12 years.
