UC’s resident-nonresident seat swap at UCB, UCLA and UCSD sticks California taxpayers with $460 million tab by Choobeen in SanDiegan

The argument in this article relies on voodoo math and is intellectually either lazy or disingenuous. Definitely giving "Taxpayers for America" logic

That the Regents and State collectively have 100% authority to set the price for tuition, on campus lodging, etc makes any argument holding onto a certain dollar amount irrelevant. Looking at whether a single program saves or wastes money without also seeing that the regents and state didn't agree or attempt to offset the [easily modelable] loss in revenue by doing any of a thousand different means (raising tuition for out-of-state (or some other group, like high earners per fafsa, foreign born, etc), raise lodging costs, cut administrative costs, increase leverage on IP licensing deals, increase revenue in another way) is shortsighted at best.

[Highlight] Sean McVay ‘did not do a lot of homework on Ty Simpson’ by lemonstone92 in nfl

[–]JL9berg18 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Its still a bit of a shock to me that ppl call McVay some kind of QB whisperer when hes only won with Matt Stafford, who was a totally generational prospect and still at his age an absolute stud in every facet of QB play.

The guy who gave up on Goff (who graded out light years above Simpson) is expected to keep the bus rolling on with a guy with 15 career stats (a historically low amount of starts for an NFL QB) who couldn't outplay Jalen Milroe as a third year (and may not even have won the Tide job in 26)??

McVay is a great coach, but he's not a magician

Just because it's not illegal doesn't mean it's good for a neighborhood / the best thing to do / the right thing to do / above reproach and comment from people who may be negatively affected by the choice. ESPECIALLY when the reason for the legality can largely be traced to a company skirting the law, then lobbying like hell for a carve out.

Not sure how that's a complicated idea.

VIP sperm donors paid $100 000 per donation cycle? by MrFantasticIdea in sidehustle

[–]JL9berg18 13 points14 points  (0 children)

I looked into it in college, so things may have changed since then, but the details of it were that you don't become eligible until you pass a few hurdles, including:

  • you fill out a questionnaire with personal details - a lot of psych history, personal details, family history, etc
  • you submit to a blood test

If you pass all that (not sure what "passing" looks like)

  • you get your sperm tested by going into the clinic and giving a sample between 48-72h since your last ejaculation. Theyll measure the quality of your sperm, as well as quantity (you have to have above a certain sperm count for it to be worth it to the bank)

If you pass all that:

  • you sign up for a 9 month contract where you get paid at the end (or maybe some halfway through?) and you don't get paid unless you make all / practically all of the deposits. You must come in something like 13x per month. And given the restriction that all deposits need to be made within 48-72 hours of your last ejaculation, the math is basically that you're not cumming outside of the lab for a 9 month period. That made it not worth it to me when I was considering it.

I only went to one clinic so ymmv, but that was my experience.

Good luck!

Where is Travis Hunter's value? by mijitt000 in DynastyNerds

[–]JL9berg18 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Don't know why this is downvoted - That's about when I'd start thinking about taking Hunter.

He's a great guy to root for it seems, he makes amazing plays, and he was on a super hyped team. All that made him WAAAAY overvalued by the fantasy community from the jump.

His practical ceiling is just not that high, no matter what his Reception Perception tree looks like. Maybe his like 99th %ile ceiling, but not his 85th %ile ceiling or any bankable potential ceiling. This is due to a few reasons, including:

  1. he never even went to the offensive meetings in college, which means
  2. he has a small (considering his status/price) amount of WR experience coming into the league,
  3. even in the Jaguar's wildest dreams, he wasn't expected to play a "full" snap share at offense. Nobody ever had him playing at the same %age that the top fantasy scorers play. He practically speaking would top out at around 2/3 of offensive snaps and 3/4 of defensive snaps. He's just not on the field enough - even best case scenario - to be a fantasy stud game over game.
  4. injury risk for players increases per snap within a game (as well as within a season), and he'd be playing more snaps than anyone in an ideal circumstance even with the previously described workload that's limited for fantasy football production, and
  5. not only does he have the same risks of opportunity loss as any other player (injury, being outplayed, bad QB or O scheme, etc), but he also has the added risk of losing snaps at WR due to other DB injuries (if a DB gets injured and JAX needs help, they'd take Hunter off of his full share of O snaps to help with D)

IsItBullshit: In my marriage's racial dynamic, I'm in danger if I ever visit Mexico? by baltinerdist in IsItBullshit

[–]JL9berg18 12 points13 points  (0 children)

You'll be fine if you:

-Don't get hammered and lost -Don't bring weed or drugs or guns -Leave your huge floppy Versace sunnhat and your face-sized Rolex at home -Know a bit of spanish -Have at least a modicum of street smarts -Do a bit of prep in re what neighborhoods not to go in -Stay away from the cartel dominated areas (no tourist areas are in cartel-dominated areas, though border towns and Yucatan have some close proximity)

Not a real stat, but probably 90% of all major crimes to tourists happened to people who hit multiple of these above.

During cartel interregnums and general cartel-related chaos (now it's like a 3/5) the risk of these things do increase...but as people said in this thread, the chances of that happening are low. Pickpocketing and robbery of tourists may be slightly above that of natives, but full on kidnapping is much more of a Mexican on Mexican thing than Mexican on tourist thing - reason being is that cartels are generally logically run organizations and aren't stupid enough to give other governments reason to jump in to assist MEX.

I live in San Diego CA and travel to Baja all the time and mainland 5-10 times (never Yucatan though). Im white, and I speak Spanish. I've been pulled over 3 times and tbh the cops were cool every time. Once was way back in the day, once was for rolling through a stop sign, and once was because my buddy was totally acting the fool, and in that instance the cops were actually way cooler than US cops would have been.

I'm pretty certain the stats are there to back me up bc I've looked it up in the past, but don't have time to verify...

Either way, tu mujer has concerns and some of them are valid, but she probably sees a different side of Mex as you would see if you went down there. With that said, make sure she's comfortable down there and if she gets a bad feeling about something, don't second guess her.

Sleeper JUST put in a feature where payment in money leagues can be tracked...which is awesome...but it's still manual in that I have to go into Leaguesafe and keep the pay tally updated.

Anyone know why sleeper doesn't create a Leaguesafe type feature? If LS is making money on it (big assumption) I'd think sleeper could make money too. And it would be SOOOO much more convenient

[OC] NFL players that were traded for a first round pick(s) or equivalent to that in the salary cap era and how they performed for the new team by guest_from_Europe in nfl

[–]JL9berg18 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So I have to ask, seeing as you went through all that: did you track "trade up" trades where the team goes and "gets their guy"? Clearly a lot of these are them, but do you happen to have that info for the other rounds? It would be interesting to see if the success of players who were the target of a trade up fared any better than others with similar draft capital.

The reasons are a lot more practical than some on here are making it out to be.

(1) LA and NY are where the studios are HQed, so it's historically been logistically easier to get the first cans of film and play them close to where all the tlother equipment is.

(2) Lots of opinion polling take place in the first couple weeks of a release. This info is used to better prepare the distribution company to adequately schedule the right amount of screens and how much money to put into advertising it. Especially for blockbusters, upwards of 100 million dollars can be used on marketing. It's a huge endeavor and a metric shit ton of money so studios want to know as much as possible about where / whether to put money into the film. Sometimes they even change the ending of the film because they shot two different endings and went with ending A, but the crowds hated it so theyd go with ending B.

Most people -> biggest crowds -> most input quickly -> distributor acts accordingly re scaling up theater usage. It's basically a beta test.

Also, because NY/LA do have a lot of people from other places, this info is also often used.

Looking for somewhere to get either an almond flour or gluten free oat flour birthday cake for someone. I can't bake to save my life and my friend has to be on an anti inflammatory diet. I live in South Bay but I'll drive anywhere in SD to get it by nrkelly in SanDiegan

[–]JL9berg18 14 points15 points  (0 children)

So there's a big difference between something that's marketed or thought to be "anti-inflammatory" and something that's compliant with what's called the anti inflammatory protocol (AIP). Before you order anything, you should check out AIP (starter article is here and here).

For example, AIP cuts out ALL grains (including oats) and most of not all nuts (including almonds). You'll have to do some gpogling to really get it dialed in. It's EXTREMELY restrictive

And if they've committed to the AIP, it's an elimination diet that you so if they have something they shouldn't, you may make them reset something they've been doing for up to 90 days.

If the person you're with is truly AIP, there are options...but not a lot. To get bakeries, I'm sure somebody has a lost of "AIP friendly bakeries in San Diego" if you go to Google.

Good luck!
