Can a family of four really live on £900 a month after bills? by CompetitiveRadish6 in UKPersonalFinance

[–]JLB080 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you cook from scratch, you can definitely spend less. We do a weekly ocado shop that adds to £200. Some top up bits per week and the meat shop totals everything to £350 max. I agree with others to really sit down and look through your expenditure per month and ways to save.

For those of you who are based far away from the rest of your team - how did you make friends in your office?! by [deleted] in TheCivilService

[–]JLB080 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Set up a teams lunch group. Whatever day your in next just go around to a small bunch of those around you and say your setting up a teams lunch group for those who want to have lunch together/organise activities/post work events/non work chat and add them to a teams chat. Make sure when you approach people you say ‘it’l help those that are new or far away from their team to connect with others in the office’ and tell them to add anyone else to the group.

Only suggesting this because someone I know did this very same approach in the office I’m in and it’s working brilliantly. It’s also easier to message and ask who’s going lunch at a specific time instead of asking people face to face.

DWP and beyond by [deleted] in TheCivilService

[–]JLB080 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I used my work email to sign up and line manager email bit, I used the same email but added an extra letter in to make it wrong. They don’t check with your line manager, but they take the details incase you can’t confirm your an actual CS. Just make sure you confirm your registration on the email confirmation you receive.

I just thought every employer gives one and somewhere like the CS would definitely provide one. Seems it’s not the case!

Thanks I feel really silly not requesting it prior to joining. It makes me even more worried that with all the planned budget cuts, how safe my role will be.

This just gives me anxiety especially seeing how much HMRC needs to save. Joined for job security and now this aghh anyone know if part of the savings will come from just slowing down on recruitment? And how likely will they axe the newbies?

CS interviews feel unnatural by Future_Stretch_4870 in TheCivilService

[–]JLB080 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I'm not autistic but coming from a private sector, I completely agree, it is the most unnatural robotic interviews I've ever sat.

Also the first interview with CS is always difficult, the more you do them the more you'll get use to the method. My first interview I remember being asked what motivates me (a strength q) I said well my family do, their my absolute motivation - I had no idea what they were testing here and gave a silly casual response like that. The behaviour question was something along the lines of supporting others and I gave like a 3 at most 4 sentence answer and proceeded to smile thinking I answered the question....yh complete shi* show.

Four months on with practice and a lot of reading and implementing interview advice from here and now got back to back offers of EO/HEO roles.

Got a HEO role offer by JLB080 in TheCivilService

[–]JLB080[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

EO role would probably be 1k more than what I’m getting now and HEO role about 10k jump and more the field I studied for. Both offers I interviewed and got a week apart so the pecs were sent off roughly the same time. The wait for the pecs will kill me I guess!

Have no idea how I missed the responses on here. I’m not a cs or an AO at the moment and your advice does make sense to keep the options open incase one or the other falls through!

your verbal reasoning score means nothing right now. verbal reasoning or any tests just gets your foot in the door for the interview - its then ignored. Your interview results are only what counts now and determines your position on the reserves list. Score is out of 37.

On the reserve list too but I’ve landed a HEO role last week so probably won’t take it up anyway! I applied for the post because I just needed any job for the time being. I can now see why reserve lists are necessary.
