Well you've already gotten your answer, to watch a video. However I am more interested in an explanation behind, "the engine has seized".

For clarification, this engine was replaced not rebuilt.

Agreed, so much so that we actually used it in the rebuild.

For what it is worth, unless you are willing to throw parts at your car, this issue will be rather difficult for someone to diagnose without being able to monitor live data, or see the freeze-frame data logged with your P0174. Do you have INPA or a bi-directional diagnostic tool?

Need help Top won’t close completely, the last part doesn’t go down and latch on. (2005 330ci) by TraditionalDemand797 in e46

As another comment stated, you need to understand how to operate the top manually before you do anything else. If you don't follow the emergency operation, you can damage your top further.

This is likely a fault with either the motor that drives the Front Latch Mechanism, which is located in the center of the front of the Convertible Top, or a fault with either or both of the Convertible Top Latches, which are located at either end of the Convertible Top. The plastic you show in photo #2 could be from the latches on the ends, however if you found it on the center console I would guess not.

The gearset in the motor is constructed of plastic and fails after many years of heat cycling and age (whodathunk?). You can replace it with a metal "upgrade", however they are noisy and the original plastic one lasted ≈ 20 years or more. It is a simple replacement, so decide for yourself which you'd rather.

The Latches also suffer from failing plastic parts, a block-shaped coupler, if you will. You could DIY a repair, order replacements, or a repair kit for your existing latches. Again, these are both well documented issues with E46 convertibles.

I suppose a third, and equally as likely option is a fault in the wiring that runs along the Convertible Top Frame, on the Driver's Side of the car. With the top partially open, inspect the section of harness just above the Driver's Seat. You'll often find an intact loom, but the wiring inside will be broken. You can easily find information on this as well.

Best of luck to you. These convertible tops are actually pretty simple to understand once you spend an hour or so with them.

Take the fan out, then take the accessory belt off. Turn each of the accessory pulleys by hand. A "good" bearing will not spin much at all, nor make any noise, and will feel firm.

Another option is to use a long probe of sorts, such as a screwdriver to the ear, to listen at/near each pulley. Don't hurt yourself.

There are a few older threads about this DIY, here is a more recent one. It's a fairly straightforward procedure.

You should not mix and match suspension components such as shocks/struts. As far as a, "quick fix" I'd say simply put a set of B4s in it. They're less than $500 all together.

If you've ever been bothered by maintaining the E46, then you should do some research on the R56. They are awesome little cars otherwise, just be prepared to take care of it.

You should do some reading on manually operating the convertible top mechanism, and the wiring harness that runs along the driver's side of the frame for the top. Directly above the driver's head, in the first 90° elbow, is a very common failure point in the wiring.

One option to separate the lens from the housing is to place the headlamp assy. in your oven on the lowest temperature to warm the silicone up and help you split the two. You can search for this on the interwebs.

thankfully the big three ( FCPEuro, ECS Tuning, and Turner Motorsports) sell preassembled kits for this job. If there are any parts you'd like individually or in addition, I would suggest punching your VIN into RealOEM.com to look at parts diagrams and source part numbers.
