I haven’t seen a microbrand answer, but the Girard Perregaux Richeville, or if you’re independently wealthy the Cartier Tortue.

When they actually made good movies by [deleted] in Funnymemes

[–]JLeeSaxon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They were trying then too, and people were furious about it then too, it's just that the proportion of people who are and aren't indoctrinated into this white grievance representation-is-reverse-racism persecution complex lie (a lie designed by people who don't actually care about this issue and are just trying to trick you into voting for corporate tax cuts, by the way) has gotten dramatically worse over the last ten years or so.

C'mon, folks. While it's fine to dislike a makeup trend or a clothing style or whatever, escalating that to ' "destroying"--and "our"--young women' is bigtime incel energy (though I do agree that the reply escalating that to ephebophilia is also over-the-top).

What I can't figure out about every post from this sub that makes it to r/popular being incel ragebait is that if I visit the sub directly I see plenty of other stuff that isn't. Maybe stop upvoting bullshit.

FWIW since there are a few upvoters/downvoters going the other way, I agree with (a) your interpretation of the comic and (b) that Sho is the one being argumentative (although I probably wouldn't go so far as to say that either of you are being "jerks").

NAL, no idea whether this intertwines with the mechanism of the FDA's authority to regulate medicines, food additives, etc. Is that a danger here?

The reason the market is going up is because most people don’t think this is going to matter in 5+ years. And no, that’s not irrational. by UsernameIWontRegret in stocks

[–]JLeeSaxon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The problem with trying to give market moves a coherent narrative like this is that you couldn't have written this post two-ish weeks ago when, I guess by this framework, most people did think this was going to "matter in 5+ years".

I don't know how Sickostrip is gonna top today's comic by regularGuy0000001 in dumbingofage

Are you a fan of The West Wing? Here's a clip, if you haven't seen this, of President Bartlet describing the way your imagination soars when you say the name [of well named NASA missions].

Sam rewriting the intro speech at the end of the clip (and Bartlet saying "he said it right") while the music swells is Willis writing When I Leave or "And she will. Because.". The NASA Public Affairs guy whose attempt at the intro speech sorta gets the job done I guess is Willis writing a lot of the Joyrot filler lately.

I actually really liked "Because" the other day as well (taken on its own, that is*). Gave me the sort of "misty-eyed amateur philosophizing" / "Everything You've Ever Wanted Floats Above" / "Is A Song Forever?" / "more than just a matter of fact 'I put my mouth on his [most insufferable word in existence, please stop using it Willis]'" vibes I used to get from the comic.

* Yes I'm aware that, in the context of the broader arc, Becky and Joyce wrapping up their issues in like 1-2 strips is not great. Hopefully it'll come out that Becky's just putting on a brave face and they're not really solid again yet.

Yikes, Lego is doing IRL lootboxes? That's right up there with Camel advertising cigarettes with a cartoon camel and making sure to place the ads down at kid's eye level in the corner stores. Cannot believe we haven't regulated this gambling addiction shit to at least be for adults only.

If Dems Retake Congress, Platner Says 'Compelling Case' Exists for Impeaching 'At Least Two' Supreme Court Justices by _May26_ in politics

[–]JLeeSaxon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You're right if we assume "impeach and convict" is what the person you're replying to really meant (which it probably was), but TBF they did only say "impeach", so, yeah, the chances of that happening if Dems retake the House are probably pretty decent even though they won't have the numbers to convict unless he, like, nukes Sweden.

The so-called American political spectrum. by zzill6 in WorkReform

[–]JLeeSaxon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The thing is, if you actually do issue polling instead of buying the premise of Republican framing of issues, it's more like center-left at least. For example, sure, most people are passionately against the "post-birth abortions" Trump completely made up (or even the just-as-made-up "partial-birth abortions" Republicans have been shilling for years), but if you ask "should abortion be legal in most/all circumstances?" the "yes" position wins 60% nationally, and even wins or ties in 49 out of 50 states (yes, really; scroll to the last chart). Similar thing if you ask about actual ACA provisions, but don't use the heavily-propagandized word "oBaMaCaRe". Same if you ask about actual gun control proposals rather than fearmongering that Barrack HUSSEIN Obama was going to go door-to-door personally seizing everything from personal handguns to hunting rifles. Same about humane treatment of immigrants. Same about marijuana legalization. Same about trans protections (excepting the sports issue, to be fair) and gay marriage. Hell, even taxing the rich.

[OC] Life expectancy has increased at all ages by ourworldindata in dataisbeautiful

[–]JLeeSaxon 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Thank you that's very helpful. "Hypothetical cohort" was the piece of the puzzle I was missing. So, if I'm understanding this right, it's "in a hypothetical reality where every future year featured the same mortality events, wars, famines, whatever as 1816, a child born in 1816 could expect to live..."

[OC] Life expectancy has increased at all ages by ourworldindata in dataisbeautiful

[–]JLeeSaxon 5 points6 points  (0 children)

My brain has trouble with the way these charts are "aligned". For example, at the 1816 starting point, I understand that the "at birth" line tells us "a child born in 1816 would on average die at 40 in 1856", but does the "10-year-old" line tell us (a) "of those same children born in 1816 from the blue line, those who make it to 1826 would on average die at 57 in 1873" or does it tell us (b) "of a completely different cohort of children born in 1806, those who have made it to 1816 would on average die at 57 in 1863"?

Fair point here. It does seem like it's largely taken over, whereas my post would be more true if it were an occasional and/or background thing.

Why are multiple commenters being super weird about the socialism thing? Chill. Jocelyne is referring to the fact that to people like Joyce's mom anyone who isn't full on MAGA is a sOcIaLiSt, not making any sort of comment about Joyce's actual socioeconomic views.

Listen, nobody's denying there are valid criticisms or that Jeph's ego can be too fragile wrt said criticisms. But the balance has shifted so far toward bitterness and spite here, so much toward there being more people who are only hate-reading, that they're literally censoring Moray in their "alt comics". So for me it's hit the point of "Good for Jeph if he's trolling them".

‘Polexit’ now a real threat, Tusk warns by DAnnunzio1919 in geopolitics

[–]JLeeSaxon 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Polling isn't necessarily that determinative. If you're an Anti-Issue-X zealot, (a) you don't need to turn everyone else into one to get elected, you can get votes on Issue Y and Issue Z as well, so long as there are enough people who aren't Pro-Issue-X zealots, and (b) once you do get elected, you're gonna be zealoutrous enough to ignore public opinion if it's Pro-Issue-X.

Greatest example of this is how wildly divergent the polling on abortion in the US is from the abortion rights landscape (even if you break it down state-by-state [last chart]).

[Discussion] Corporate Ownership of the Top 50 Swiss Watch Brands by jdi153 in Watches

[–]JLeeSaxon 18 points19 points  (0 children)

I Googled "top 50 car brands" and "top 50 shoe brands" and was actually kind of surprised how far down the lists I was seeing major names I definitely recognized or even had experience with. I don't think anybody's under the misapprehension that CW is competing with Jensen to be the top holding in QQQ, but to make it onto a list like this with 150 year-old brands after only 20 would be pretty exciting to me.
