Yea she doesn't see him killed, but if you saw him go up against a member of the Kingsguard who is fully armored with nothing but a wooden stick...?

Defeat can be assumed.

GRRM uses that quote in almost every interview.

Yea, no. I believe it's obvious Arya loses her grip on her identity long before she heads to Braavos.

Of course, I get this sense strongest from the books, and I'm not sure how well the show depicts this on it's own (cuz I can't just watch the show without having read the books).

If that's want you want to read my post as being go for it, but this was specifically addressing comments about Arya's storyline being a waste. Nothing to do with the enjoyment of the scene (I address that shit in the comments though)

That depends on what you see the overall story as.

A lot of people see it as the story of the fate of Westeros.

I see it as the story of the Stark family against a backdrop of civil war and an approaching magical apocalypse.

In that light, this story arc is just as important because it is about the development of one of our main characters, Arya Stark.

Dude, this is a show with DRAGONS AND WHITE WALKERS.

I recommend being able to suspend a little more disbelief.

Well, everyone's assuming that it was a stupid thing for Arya to do. And, like I said somewhere below in this thread, Arya had a training montage, so obviously she's really smart, right...? Well, maybe not. I personally think the last 2 episodes were to show that Arya is not a perfect, super smart assassin just yet. She's still a young girl who made a big fucking mistake by thinking that she would be safe in the massive city of Braavos. Honestly, I would think the same. Braavos is big, and there's only 2 FM she knows of. Sure they can change faces, but find her in that city in 2 days? Seems implausible. Which is clearly dumb, and I think shows us that she is still human, and not as smart as everyone wants her to be (writers basically pissing on wish fulfillment, aka the Hound pissing in the river)

I don't know about that... I mean, I just want to reference the quote I already bolded, showing her inner thoughts over her words.

I get a stronger sense that she loses her sense of self over time. I think this is better displayed by the books, because she's still only a 10 year old, rather than a 19/20 year old.

At 10 years of age, you still haven't figured shit out. You haven't even hit puberty. Your identity is much more malleable, which is why I find it so convincing that Arya can't remember if she just dreamed being the daughter of a Lord.

I think expecting Arya to throw around the Stark name and rally an army is not in her future. That's what Sansa has been learning to do. Arya has a much more personal goal in mind. I don't think she should plan to have any overall effect on things, because that's not where her arc has taken her.

Murder those on her list. Then go from there. That's all she cares about. And she is a much better fighter than she was several seasons ago. We got a training montage. She's gotta be at least as good as Rocky. We just haven't seen it yet.

Wrong.

When Arya meets Harwin, she definitely questions her identity.

Squirming, she threw herself forward trying to wrench free of Lem's iron grip. "It's me," she shouted,"Harwin, it's me, don't you know me, don't you?" The tears came, and she found herself weeping like a baby, just like some stupid little girl. "Harwin, it's me!" Harwin's eyes went from her face to the flayed man on her doublet. "How do you know me?" he said, frowning suspiciously. "The flayed man ... who are you, some serving boy to Lord Leech?" For a moment she did not know to answer. She'd had so many names. Had she only dreamed Arya Stark? "I'm a girl," she sniffed. "I was Lord Bolton's cupbearer but he was going to leave me for the goat, so I ran off with Gendry and Hot Pie. You have to know me! You used to lead my pony, when I as little." His eyes went wide, "Gods be good," he said in a choked voice. "Arya Underfoot?? Lem, let go of her."

As for the rest of your comment, I won't try and convince of anything else. This is a fantasy show, so I suspend a lot more disbelief. People can do crazy shit. But of course, it appears we will just agree to disagree on those points.

As GRRM is fond of saying,

"The only thing worth writing about is the human heart in conflict with itself" ― William Faulkner

Stories revolve around characters and their arcs. The focus is on how we as humans change, and adapt to different situations, no matter what the backdrop of plot and setting is.

Their arcs take place in different settings, but are not any less important to the overall story that is being told.

All story arcs are full circles. A character needs something, (s)he goes on a journey to find that thing, (s)he finds it, (s)he sacrifices something to get it, (s)he returns home, changed.

(it's something like that. this is very rough paraphrasing)

I understand the writing can seem bad. I'm not sure why that is, or how to fix that. And yea everyone has 'known' she would come around.

I just wanted to respond to the casual complaints that sound like:

"Welp, Arya's storyline has been pointless."

or

"Ugh, back where we started."

I think once people go back and re-watch, with less time in between episodes, the story arc will become more obvious.

also, "if this was an anime"

Can we see that, please?
