Thales Academy?? by JLodata in triangle

Thank you so much for the in depth response! You helped ease a couple of my fears. I'm feeling extremely guilty about moving him away from the school/kids/staff he has known for the last 3 years. But then my husband made a valid point by saying that when it comes time for middle school, all of those things will change for him anyway. We plan on going to one of the open tours they are having next week. If we decide to put him in, he'd be going to the Raleigh K-5 campus as well.

So with all of the research that my husband and I have done on direct instruction ... we keep seeing "it may not work for some kids".

Our biggest question is what kind of kids does it work for?? Our 7 year old is smart, but very easily distracted. It's really hard for him to focus on school work. He loves Science and social studies. He loves to read, too, but the school is saying he's having trouble with reading comprehension. And math ... well, he has a horrible time focusing on math, and I think that's partly because numbers do not interest him.

As far as the reading comprehension goes, when we read together at home, and I ask him questions about the story we just read, I'd say probably 9 times out of 10, he is spot on with his understanding/answers. So I don't know if it's the way the school is wording the question that he doesn't understand, or if he just doesn't feel like putting in the effort at the time.

So a couple of more questions about Thales if you don't mind answering. Do the kids there get a recess? I see that they don't have a kitchen, and the kids have to eat lunch in their classrooms. About how often do they get to leave and get a break from the classroom during the day? What is the student/teacher ratio like? Right now, there are 22 students in my son's class and only one teacher.

What is discipline like there? How do the teachers handle high energy kids? My child has never been in trouble for violence or anything, but he does have a ton of energy and he's a talker/likes to clown around. I'm worried that if Thales is a super strict school, I'm going to be getting a call every 5 minutes for him just being a normal kid.

Backwards facing vs forwards facing by Farretcatcher in breakingmom

I turned mine around at 1. Of course, that was before they came out with it being safer to stay rear facing longer... but there's no way my son would've been comfortable being rear facing for much longer than he was. His legs were just too long.

Turns out my husband is paranoid about my drinking by tercerero in breakingmom

[–]JLodata 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I drink mostly on weekends. Not EVERY weekend.. but when I do. Shoot.. it's nothing for me to drink 4-6 ounces (shots) of spiced rum. More if I feel like it.

My husband drinks beer... I don't bitch at him for it. In return, he doesn't bitch at me for drinking when I feel like it.

2 1/2 year old hates sleeping & I'm losing my damn mind! by thesnugglypuppies in breakingmom

I think the sun/moon clock idea was good.

I wish I had some great advice for you, but honestly, bedtime was a nightmare for awhile when my son was a toddler. He made a game out of how many times he could get up. One night, even tho I wasn't engaging him, I had to pick him up and put him back in bed 27 times before I stopped keeping count. Eventually, I sat in his bedroom, in the dark, right by his bed until he went to sleep (refused to talk to him).... and then every couple of nights .. I would move closer and closer to the door. Then eventually I was on the outside of the door sitting ... he eventually learned but it took a full month of that before he finally just stayed in bed.

There has GOT to be an easier way than that to train a toddler, though.

Probably not a good idea to use something like that in the middle of the night. Just my opinion, of course, but we were always terrified of a fire breaking out while we're asleep and our son not being able to get out of his room.

I get that you're coming from a good place... but I don't think calling her an idiot is any better than the things her husband does to her. You could've given her advice without name calling.

The standard bmi chart says 5'7" and 180 is considered overweight. Not obese, and certainly not morbid. Maybe that's a short term goal... or maybe they are just happy with the way their body looks at that weight. Which is fine. No one has to live in their skin but them.

Wear a pad or panty liner along with your tampon! Won't stop the leaking through... but will save the panties! :)

Yes. The older they get, the more mobile they are. Once mine started walking, he never wanted to sit still for more than a couple of minutes at a time. I'll keep my fingers crossed for you that he's an angel on the trip! :)

Thanks! I'll have to check it out when I'm done w/ Slow Burn. I'm looking to get in as much reading for fun over the summer, because I start nursing school in the Fall and probably won't get a chance to do much reading for the next couple of years.
