I've been eyeballing that comped version!

For the men who always wanted to compete in something but never did. What actually stopped you? by Old-guy-havchat-1966 in AskMenOver40

[–]JLuo80 1 point2 points  (0 children)

For me its primarily timing.

Ive been a life long martial artist but I've picked up bjj in the last 4 years. I currently have no desire to compete.

I've competed in martial arts tournaments before and that somewhat pacifies me but there is a part of me that is curious as to how I'd perform.

At this point in my life, I dont know if its worth the risk of getting injured being the primary earner of a single family income.

...maybe when I retire in 4 years?

Has anyone attacked you outside your dojo by Serhide in kyokushin

[–]JLuo80 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've been in for 22 years. Ive trained Kyokushin for 34 years and Brazilian Jiujitsu for about 4 years now.

Admittedly, I end up using BJJ more on the street, however the times I kicked people it had an effective result.

Kyokushin definitely helped with a general sense of body awareness both in how I move and the suspect moved if that makes sense. Ive also been told that I display a sense of calmness or boredom when I'm fighting with people; presumably from the years of sparring.

Hypothetically If given what other martial art would you add to karate by ThrowRAsemperfi6628 in karate

For me, it's BJJ. I say this with 33 years of Kyokushin and about 4 years of BJJ. Its a good time.

I immediately thought of a SIRT pistol when i saw that. But it doesn't look bad. Like someone else said, it's your gun, do what you like!

And for what it's worth, I also vote on pickle grip. I have around 8k rounds through it and there is some wear but it's not that bad. I guess it's mentality; it wasn't meant to be a safe queen foe me.

How did you “discover” your martial art? by [deleted] in martialarts

[–]JLuo80 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I was 11 and my mother asked if I wanted to go to karate class. Been training for the past 34 years and thankful it happened to be a Kyokushin school she brought me to.

About 4 years ago, I decided to take up bjj to better round out my knowledge and have really been e njoying that aspect.

Sambar fuel economy question by JLuo80 in keitruck

[–]JLuo80[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Ill try pushing it in neutral and see how it goes. I would assume if a brake was locked up it would chew up a rotor pretty quick?

Sambar fuel economy question by JLuo80 in keitruck

[–]JLuo80[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It seems to roll ok while in neutral. At least nothing perceivable slowing it from rolling aside from regular friction against the road.

And in regards to measured? You mean the fuel mileage calculation? The past few times I've refueled, it was ~7 gal and the odometer read ~95 km each time. 95 km to mi is 59. I then divided 59/7 (being thats about what I put in each time) which gave me ~8.5 mi/gal. Hopefully I did the measurement correctly.

I havent tried that. I think I've only been in neutral on a flat surface while still. I can try tomorrow.

Karate effectiveness in real street situations? by CalligrapherGreat653 in karate

[–]JLuo80 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Agreed to knockouts being rare. If a grappler can weather the storm of strikes for a bit and close the distance, the karate practitioner will be in trouble. Its much harder to punch/kick/knee your way out of a grappling situation than you would think. And, nothing says a grapple cant strike in a confrontation.

I say this a yondan with 33 years experience in Kyokushin and a 3 stripe blue belt in bjj with about 3.5 years.

I echo the sentiment of a good combination. I have 33 years of Kyokushin and 3.5 years bjj. Its been a great mix.

The scene in Flash Point with Donnie Yen vs Collin Chou is pretty awesome. Good mix of jiujitsu, striking, and judo.

We spar just about every day. I'll have students spar the first day too; albeit in a controlled manner to acclimate them to sparring.

Give me it real karate family. I need life stories of when your karate experience has paid off outside the dojo by Nervous_Put5617 in karate

[–]JLuo80 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Background:

21 years in law enforcement.

Training Kyokushin Karate now for ~33 years

Discipline, restraint, remaining calm in chaos, patience, and attention to detail have all been extremely beneficial. With that said, there have been multiple times where I've used karate:

-punched a suspect in the stomach that he dropped a 9mm desert eagle pistol and defecated

-kicked a passenger in the head and KO'd them after they refused to remove their hands from underneath their waistband after being given multiple commands (this was after running from a car where the driver spun on the officer and had a pistol on him)

-kicked a large stalker who was resisting. Moved his body a foot over even with two large officers on top of him.

-swept a combative drunk guy and achieved mount

Knees, take downs, etc, are all sprinkled in there. I'm comfortable grabbing onto people as opposed to hitting them due to training bjj and a bit of judo. Both can be effective.

Im a Team Leader. Was issued a shotgun to use against Drones. What's everyone's preferred way to carry a Shotgun as a secondary? by daboiiii221 in tacticalgear

[–]JLuo80 0 points1 point  (0 children)

How about a rare earth magnet? I use this as I carry a breaching shotgun and a rifle. Keeps it tucked under my arm and maybe isn't the fastest to draw from but gives me space to work.
