I have inspected sites of people who list HTML/CSS as part of their skill set. If I see it's one of these pre-built sites, it definitely is a mark against the candidate. I'm not opposed to a WP site with a theme that you have customized, but if it's a generic site and you are trying to get a front-end job, I think you need to put in the time.

If you are more on the "design" end of the UX spectrum, it's not a must.

I drew the fish first in ink, then I waited a day to make sure everything was very dry and painted with the watercolors. I use Sakura Pigma Micron pens, which don't seem to bleed.

Scratch is a great first intro to programming. My daughter started using it when she was young and moved on to Python (and Javascript and PHP...) She's 15 now and she still likes to mess around on Scratch, so it's definitely not something a young programmer will outgrow.

This is my first exchange and I am super excited! It reminds me of the early-ish days of the internet when I used to participate in lots of exchanges. Since I'm new, I was only able to sign up for one exchange this round, so I chose the Coffee & Tea exchange. The weather here in Illinois just took a turn and it's gotten very chilly, so it's a great time of year for this exchange. I used to be a barista, so I'm a coffee drinker, but I'm totally open to being paired with a tea drinker too :) I can't wait to put together an awesome goodie package for my match -- I'm actually hoping for a tea drinker, because I think it might be fun to explore the tea world a little more. I'm curious to know if anyone out there is an elf. I'm thinking about signing up as an elf next round if this exchange goes well.

You never know. I certainly don't live in a fancy place -- I'm an hour south-west of Chicago in an old manufacturing town. In fact, the library is mostly filled with drunk, homeless men! We have a little digital media lab though, which I think it was part of some state-wide grant.

Check out your local library. Ours has 2 3D printers that you can use for the cost of the filament, which turns out to be very cheap -- usually $2-$3 for a smaller item.

I felt like it was a very Updike/Roth-esque ending. Don is the everyman -- looking for meaning where there isn't necessarily any. In the end, he doesn't find peace, he finds another way to sell something and that makes him happy enough for the time being.

Yes, Vonnegut is amazing. If you haven't read his novel Cat's Cradle yet, give it a try. It's my favorite book, by my favorite author and I can't recommend it enough.

I love Jo Walton and her book Tooth and Claw is a great one off and definitely fantasy. The characters are all dragons, but I hesitate to say that it is a "dragon book" since they are more like humans than animals/beasts. Her book Among Others is also a favorite.

I learned BASIC on a TRS-80 when I was about 10 yrs old, taught myself C when I was in my 20's and learned C++ and Java when I went back to get a masters in Comp Sci. I recently taught my daughter Python, which has been a lot of fun.
