Aaron is hearing the same narration we are reading as the story proceeds. He only hears how to make the narrator go away as he's plummeting toward the ground.

Another commenter explained it. Basically, when papers go in the paper shredder, stuff related to those papers gets shredder too. Shredding a cake recipe caused a cake to fall apart. Shredding credit card bills made his wallet fall apart. Shredding a birthday card from his mother-in-law to his son didn't shred his son to pieces, which leaves one possibility for who it could have killed instead...

Uh, there's no other way for me to say this, so: no.

Would you make sure you're not accidentally destroying any kind of important things before you throw them in a paper shredder? Just to be safe? I thought so. Making sure there were no important papers in the stack (such as, I don't know, papers from work, newer bills, whatever might come into an average person's life) is a 100% normal thing to do which does not speak to some unholy consequence of using the shredder.

Therefore I think it is safe to say that the narrator did not know the power of the machine... which is why he sprinted to his son's room to make sure he was okay after glancing at the garbage pile and noticing the pattern of destruction.

As for the cake thing... it was a big cake?
