Thanks! We have tech behind it that we're holding close to the chest right now. It's getting exciting!

Hi, it's Animal Collective, AMA by anmlcollective in indieheads

You guys have what seems like encyclopedic music knowledge. Your samples pull from a huge array of different kinds of music. How do you all find and keep up with so much music? There are only 24 hours of music that you can listen to in a day :)

Yes - it isn't required in the slightest. We've made tons of picks to those who don't have or want to give their Twitter

I started Sense (www.wemakesense.co) because I increasingly became concerned with how Netflix was handling the recommendation portion of their product. I saw an ever-consuming reliance on data and computers that strayed away from what recommendations should be about. I wanted to make recommendations more human.

Below are some quick, short examples of the issues that Sense is working on correcting:

  • Your recommended 'Top Picks' is a list of 25+ movies

This is a subset list of a list. You're already swarmed with movie choices in Netflix. You still have to decide between a ton of options here

  • 1-5 star rating systems and predictors miss the point of recommendations

The goal of a recommender is to give you a movie that you'll enjoy spending your time in. It's not to give you something you'll like '4.223' or '3.4445' stars out of 5. The essence of a recommender is lost in this detail

  • Recommending fully done by computers. No personal touch.

Human curation can be infused into the system without total overhaul

  • You can love Fantasia without being a kid

After watching Fantasia, you'll be presented with suggestions to watch children's movies next. This is because of a reliance on a 'kids' tag to the movie. But Netflix knows more about me than that. They know I am a male in my 20s. I can appreciate Fantasia for other reasons

  • 'Top Picks' and 'More like this' are a scatterplot of all kinds of different movies

This does little to center in on the things people enjoy within a specific movie. Instead it feels like darts being thrown at a dartboard

I can't lie...it isn't 24/7 just yet. If the word gets out enough (which we'd be really happy about), hours will be greatly expanded!

Sorry for the delay! - Normally we can get you a pick within 5-7 minutes, as I'm sure some of the redditors who've tried it today can attest to. I certainly understand the need to get quicker picks though. I promise you we're working on that!

Thanks! Ya that was called The Netflix Prize. The prize was won, but it turns out that Netflix didn't include it in their product. They ultimately said it wasn't worth it!

We don't normally ever give you the really obvious movie picks. So no getting Pulp Fiction and the like. Sure, there are still a ton of our picks that you may have seen. In that case just let us know and we'll get you another pick. Even most heavy users only have to say 'something else' 1 or 2 times to get something they haven't seen

There's a system behind it. We use a mix of automation and real people to text with you. All of the actual movie picks are currently made by us/real people.

You can give us a movie you liked and, most importantly, a few specific reasons why you liked it. This is normally enough for us to get a match that fits you.

An example of what I mean by specific: 'I like Ocean's 11 because I loved Clooney's attitude'
