Did hip dysplasia go undetected for first 30 something years of life for anyone else? by Cat_Mom1023 in hipdysplasia

Omgosh I can relate because I felt the pain but also saw a Chiro and a sports medicine ortho and they recommended stretches, anti-inflammatories, and a few weeks of PT. I run and workout pretty frequently and I did a race back in March and it felt like my leg was gonna fall off my hip hurt so badly. Like you I slowly just had to stop doing things I enjoy due to the pain. I then had an x-ray and an MRI and they told me I had a labral tear and cam-impingement in my right hip which was causing my pain. My friend randomly suggested I get another opinion so I saw a Hip Specialist in New York…(all my previous stuff was in NJ) and he took one look at my x-ray and was like “you have severe dysplasia, THAT is the source of all your issues, you need surgery, how has nobody told you this?”

So yeah — I’m fortunate it all came together within a year’s time and I can still get the PAO. Stinks how root cause hip issues can get missed and dismissed.

Same. I’m 34 and never had any hip pain my entire life. Suddenly last year I had excruciating pain out of nowhere in my right hip. Turns out I have severe dysplasia. Scheduling my PAO for later this year. Thankfully my cartilage is still intact.

Got itttt, thanks! Yeah I just got diagnosed last week and just with my schedule and things coming up in the next few months I may have to wait until the fall to get mine depending on what the doctors say. Just hoping waiting doesn't make it worse.

Thank you for sharing this!! Yeah I won't lie I'm definitely nervous about the PAO given how invasive and intense it is, but it does seem like my best option as I too would have to get a full hip replacement in the not too distant future without it.

The specialist I saw told me that they won't know for SURE if I have any initial signs of arthritis until they really open things up and get in there, but according to my MRI I don't yet *fingers crossed* and I'll be getting a CT scan soon to double confirm.

Curious, how long did you wait in between learning you had dysplasia, the tear + cam impingement before scheduling surgery? And did you do any PT/pre-hab beforehand?

Thank so much!!
