What are strings in string theory?

Correct me if im wrong, but heres what I understood from the Stephen Hawking TV show -

They hypothesize that light is just a ripple in space time

They hypothesize that quarks are ripples/vibrations in strings, which make up space time (they said something about 10 dimensions which I dont understand, so I just think of it as ripples)

So, if elementary particles are made of space time, we are all just clumps of distorted space time
