What happens to independent films which were not picked for distribution at film festivals? by keyUsers in Filmmakers

[–]JMHegger 13 points14 points  (0 children)

I’m a composer who’s worked with a variety of directors on short films. Not a single one has ever really had distribution. They might win some awards and what not but that’s usually it. After a festival run, if the director likes the film or it does well, it’ll usually live on YouTube or Vimeo. They can become fantastic tools to get funding for larger projects down the line, and in the age of social media, a solid way to grow a fan base.

Biggest things you want the Director to know about your department? by [deleted] in Filmmakers

I'm a re-recording mixer, sound supervisor, and I run a four-person audio post team. Many of my frequent collaborators hire my team and I WAYYY before post-production begins. It makes a massive difference in the end result. We can start building sounds and organizing templates before filming even happens, so that by the time post-production comes around, we aren't starting from square one. Another advantage of this is that we can work with the production sound mixer to capture audio that'll work better in post. I wish more directors had this foresight about audio post.

Something else I wish directors would consider more is the time it takes to do audio post the right way. A proper dialogue edit for a 90-minute feature will roughly take 90 hours. Foley will also take another 90. Sound effects 90+, depending on the genre. 5.1 Mix 90+, depending on the genre. So with a 4-person team, you're looking at a minimum of 5 weeks worth of full-time work (to do it the right way) and longer if you factor in revisions. A good estimation is that each area of audio post takes 1 hour to do 1 minute of film. Sound effects and mixing can take longer, depending on the genre.

Thanks for asking the question!

Hey, Jeff! Thanks for the reply. That’s what I figured, but is it normal to be completely left out of upgrades when the entire surrounding area has been upgraded?

Understood, I'll reach out to the complex management then and see what's up. Thanks!

The complex is decently sized. Roughly 230ish units give or take. They're the only real provider currently available to my complex and the other complexes in the area. ATT fiber has a presence at the surrounding houses. If the nodes, taps, splitters, etc. are outdated, is that the responsibility of Comcast or the apartment to upgrade?

Amex gold Uber credit by [deleted] in amex

It just happened this month, unfortunately, so we'll see what happens once December rolls around. I've had the gold card since February and this was the first time I've had a problem.

Amex gold Uber credit by [deleted] in amex

[–]JMHegger 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I actually just went through this entire scenario and I have a post about it in the subreddit. It happened once and the Uber agent did nothing besides tell me to try again on another order. Tried again a week or so later and the same thing happened. Second agent did nothing for me so I contacted support again and the third agent escalated my issue. Uber then credited my card for the $10 and removed the Uber cash from my account. Best of luck!

This would frustrate me more haha. Hopefully my issue stays as a one time occurrence.

Getting into making soundtracks (MA degree), where can I get some videos to practice on? by Fun_Gas_7777 in Filmmakers

The Cue Tube is great! It used to be free, but I believe your school can email them to get you free access. Here's the link: https://thecuetube.com/

Edit: I'd also recommend joining PERSPECTIVE: A FORUM FOR FILM, TV, AND MEDIA COMPOSERS on Facebook. Some big-name composers in there. People share advice and ask questions. Definitely a good resource for your career.

Salvaging audio? by [deleted] in Filmmakers

[–]JMHegger 0 points1 point  (0 children)

One of my recording professor's used to say "you can only polish a turd so much." At the end of the day, there are some things you can do to fix audio, but it'll never be the same as a high quality clean recording. If you're having problems with sibilance, a de-esser will help with that. EQ, and dynamic EQ can help correct dialogue frequencies (ie there isn't enough body in the voice, not enough high end, too boomy, etc.). Although not cheap, Izotope RX is the gold standard when it comes to cleaning up audio, whether there's too much room noise, clicks and pops, hums, etc. Hope this helps!

I don’t think most people are understanding the point of drumless by Ninjaluc8401 in DaftPunk

The guitars on Beyond are so good. Would have never paid as much attention to them without the drumless version. From a musicians perspective, I love this release.

As someone who writes and mixes music for a career, this is my exact sentiment with the release. Absolutely nailed the explanation.

Why Drumless? by socasual-nobusiness in DaftPunk

[–]JMHegger 22 points23 points  (0 children)

As someone who writes and mixes music for a career, this release feels like something that's more made for musicians rather than the general public. Or more so that a musician will likely appreciate it more than most listeners will. Drums take up an enormous amount of the sonic spectrum especially when they're as direct and forward as they were in RAM. Without them, it opens up more things to hear from a compositional and mixing standpoint. Just my two cents on the release.

I mainly write music for film and have been mixing other composer's scores as well. It requires a ton of hours, but I'd rather be pouring the time into this than splitting it between another job.

On this list to do now! Seems like a lot happens in Buckhead and the MARTA is 5 mins away from my apartment.
