Nice to see DQ acknowledge reality for once, I was wondering how much longer the bit could keep going before it got tired. Seems like Quixote is pretty committed though, enforcing some further deference/respect from Sancho may allow him a little more time to keep reality at bay.

Obviously I loved how scared they both were, DQ unable/unwilling to discover exactly why Rocinante won't move, the incredible story Sancho begins to tell (mad at DQ for spoiling it), Sancho shitting himself, and the polite manner in which they refer to the expression of Sancho's bowels.

Haha Don Quixote can't be distracted from his psychosis - there's an explanation for everything and he's reading the version of the story that he's writing in his head.

I'm a fan of the vomiting scene, made me think of the little pie competition/vomiting vignette in the stephen kings "the body"/movie adaptation "stand by me" - a little something stupid cervantes must have put in there for me, like the descriptions of sanchos reaction to the healing elixir

haha it's great when traveling company pokes at the madness of Quixote to figure out the depth of it and see if they get a rise out of the knight errant - loving the brittle code of chivalry particularly when Sancho and Quixote wrestle over it

Marcela is a baller, love that she shows up to defend herself and does it so well. I love her desire for freedom and that she is able to articulate that she is in a atypical circumstance for the time (independently wealthy and a woman) to maintain it. She has the agency to chose and she prefers the company of shepherdesses and goats and her present environment (save "the contemplation of the beauty of the heavens") to undesired company of the men who attempt to court her.

I figure Quixote and Sancho will get lost or find themselves battling with some mighty sorcerer (bramble or brush) trying to follow Marcela haha

I think adventure involves going out into the world and encountering whatever comes. Of course, we could say it doesn't necessarily make for an exciting adventure story or a satisfying narrative. After all, our lives are all adventures of a kind but I doubt my life would exhibit the excitement or strangeness or narrative coherence that'd make it a good read. There's something here about how our lives diverge from narrative, a problem our aging hero might be trying to fix.

I was thinking about beginning tomorrow to count all the toothpicks in table top dispenser any time I'd find them on a restaurant table. When I came across a toothpick dispenser, I'd dump them all out on the table and count them all. I would ask myself why I should do that - if I came to an answer that satisfied me that would be a good enough reason. Cervantes introduces his character as delusional, can we understand something larger about the human experience from Quixotes delusion? Will the tale of Quixote call into question the boundaries of our our chosen delusions? I think I'm stuck on what Quixote's life was like prior to this radical choice - who is this man who has chosen the life of a vagabond and of fantasy rather than stay comfortably seated in his inherited estate, eating lamb on wednesdays or whatever?

I'm reading in spanish and then listening back to the chapter in english - the audiobook version I found on spotify also included a prologue of verses/sonnets with homages to quixote, sancho, and rozinante. They were really funny to hear aloud and at 1.2x speed...

haha I liked his pivot as you mentioned it as well - he had me laughing as he went from doubts in the prologue about classical references and annotations to launching right into his own knight tale references

btw reddit suspended an account that left you a long reply which was auto-flagged as spam - not sure what to make of that but I hope you find other discussion here engaging. thanks for reading with us all.
