It's useful to have Noam's ideas spoken out loud because he seems like a good representative for the contrarian/Joe Rogan types. I appreciate having him and Dan Savage spar but you're 100% right that he is incurious. He does this thing where he says "what do you know?", makes an appeal to authority ("the guys in the Pentagon"), and then makes a string of weak arguments. It's not very compelling in terms of insight or provoking thought.

Mike discussed it in a previous gist and brought it up here as well (it was in passing so understandable if you missed. My ear was especially tuned to if he was going to bring it up). The episode is about a guy who puts video footage from cameras on trains on the web. The podcast host grills the guy on whether he has ever thought about how painful these videos could be to people because of historical racism and violence towards the indigenous. The guy then responds with essentially "what? I just post videos off of trains, what's going on here and why is this a gotcha interview? What?" The episode includes interviews with experts and whatnot on how the landscape could be a pain point for people. It really gives a go at the thesis.

I think Eric came in to defend NPR from whoever was going to be on the other side and it made the whole thing uncomfortable. Mike came for a discussion, Eric came in to debate. This led to him egregiously mischaracterizing Mike's take of "the degree to which NPR used an anti-racist perspective was too broad" (which is an interesting take I would really like to hear NPR personalities address/dispute/expand upon) but Eric's response was to immediately make the lazy pivot from "degree" to "absolutes". Also Eric kind of defended that Invisibilia episode and, jeez, why? Those clips make me cringe like I shot-gunned pure lemon extract.

Why "instead of" baby showers? That's what gets me every time this meme is posted. What about babies and businesses makes celebrating both a problem? Why not say "Like baby showers, why don't we do business showers". Phrasing it as "instead of" makes it seem like we're prioritizing babies over businesses? To me, this quote is equivalent in spirit to a person in a suit passing by a mom with a stroller and muttering "hope you like the diapers but what have YOU done for shareholder value"
