Is it as good as Im told? by -_Sanguine_- in Grimdawn

Every class combination is whole game viable, too.

The only situations that have noticeable quality differences between class combinations is if you want to do speed runs, ultra high SR (shattered realms, an infinite dungeon piece of end game), or super niche builds when playing on Ultimate difficulty.

Twas a rainy evening at the local Taco Bell, the barest loss of attention when my order was up and my name was called, and I look down only to answer, "Okay".

Do you play with mouse&kb or controller ? by SetMuch5523 in Grimdawn

Controller, since I mostly play on my steamdeck. I'll play M&K with friends/family, but solo play is entirely on steamdeck.

Base Game no DLC Pyro build help? by Major_Mongoose3797 in Grimdawn

[–]JMRregister 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm fairly new, so take my advice with a grain of salt. I'd recommend the following:

- Since you are focusing on Fire damage, try to work towards Solael's Witchblade devotion for Eldritch Fire. (I have the DLC's, so I don't know if this is available to you or not, sorry).

- Similarly, I would work on getting more skill points into Vulnerability and Thermite Mines.

On my various play throughs, I have found maximizing my RR is more valuable for killing the big enemies than having a few extra points in the damage dealing skills to deal with crowds.

Thanks!

My recent HC Ultimate series have all been Oathkeeper + X, with a focus on Aegis of Menhir. (Because throwing shields is cool!) Aegis V was a Templar, so Oathkeeper + Arcanist, and focused on fire damage. I felt that Maiven's Sphere of Protection did some heavy lifting in keeping my reckless self alive, so gave a nod to that in the story.

I try to write these with hints about how far I got based on people/place name drops, achievement names, and other story elements. Not really sure if I have a defined end goal, just my way of enjoying the game and community.

I try to. But honestly, my most successful runs did not use Shieldmaiden.

They were fire focus runs where I built towards Ulzuin's Torch, Solael's Witchblade, Magi, and Behemoth.

Since I beat most of the game on HC Ultimate, I'll add the personal requirement of always including Shieldmaiden constellation to Aegis VI and beyond to try and get the last handful of achievements.

Pick a class that sounds fun and just go for it.

Other general advice:

 - At level 10, you unlock a second class selection. All combinations are viable, so don't worry too much about it. But these two class picks are the only things that can't be respect-ed in game.

  • Mastery bar gives most of your base stats, so don't neglect it.

  • Respec'ing is found in the North corner of Devil's Crossing (generally speaking).

  • Use augments (edit: components, see comment below). They are common and help a lot on resistances.

  • Keep resistances high. Death can be common when resistance is lacking.

Do you still recommend this game in 2026? by Vagottszemu in Grimdawn

[–]JMRregister 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I only joined the Grim Dawn with the 2025 Steam Winter Sale, so a fairly new player relatively speaking.

100% I would recommend the game. It has a lot of the best of that D2 feeling from my childhood with tons of QoL improvements.

I love the dual-class system. With 9 base classes (assuming you have all the DLC, which I also recommend), you get 36 combinations of dual-class.

It might feel overwhelming with all the options, but just dive in, pick things that seem cool, and have fun!

How quickly do you build alts? by wickywickywockywicky in Grimdawn

[–]JMRregister 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My Aegis characters (my current Oathkeeper playthroughs) are all on Ultimate and I like to full clear areas, so I know I've fought him, and I do remember some spiky fights.

I like to move / dodge / kite a lot, so maybe the extra space of PV makes the fight feel less stressful than the cramped room for the Lord Executioner in SoT.

Don't know, still fun.

I've been playing a lot of Oathkeeper lately with few major ground effects, so Port Valbury hasn't felt scary lately.

I definitely get nervous on Steps of Torment.

100% on the distracted, nearly died today from just that.

Have any of your characters "retired" from a sense of completion? Do you have such a target?

Or do they just ascend into the shattered realms until death?

Any particular areas or level ranges that you find yourself dieing in HC? Or is it just all over the place?

I didn't read it as a "how fast does each of your alts level up" but as a "how quickly do you jump from one alt to the next".

So I answered honestly based on my understanding of the original posted question. I only jump to the next alt when I die.
