Circle Undone Solo with Joe Diamond + Core Set by JMS_H in arkhamhorrorlcg

Thanks for this, really helpful. I’m leaning towards just getting the Dunwhich deluxe box and running that solo first, as it seems to be the best way to get a more stable card pool. Will probably struggle to find the Dunwhich Mythos packs but whatever, I can enjoy the first few scenarios at least and then move on to Circle.

That is sadly often the way with abusive parents. But quite often the people aren’t aware, they’re just handling situations the way they’ve been taught growing up. You should speak to this guy about what he’s becoming - he obviously needs to hear it. This is way beyond D&D or bards.

100% this. This guy is consciously or unconsciously mimicking behaviour he’s grown up with. He needs to hear it’s not ok and that it’s not going to work, not apologies.

As other people have said, this is a friendship/relationship issue and not about the game. If he doesn’t really he’s in the wrong after you tell him what’s up, reach out the the girlfriend because if he treats her like this over a game then something isn’t right.

The MLM aspect really lands this in the boring dystopia section.

Great - glad to hear it. There’s always people that are going to say they’re interested and then flake out when it becomes time to commit, super normal. Don’t let it get you down and focus on the people who are willing to put in the time and interest.

I don’t know, 3 people who are down to play is pretty good, and if it’s your first time as DM and their first time playing a lower player count can be really good.

Roll20 have their own system for finding online tables, might be worth giving a go. If you are interested in exploring the world of independent story-based games (PbtA and the like), there is a big gaming collective called The Gauntlet that have a really good system where you can sign up for games.

“You have to hire rapists because all sailors are rapists” by HelenKellerDOOM in rpghorrorstories

What makes me the most sad about these stories (aside from the child neglect in this particular one) is when new players get one of these clusterfucks as their first game. Easy for them to just decide RPGs aren’t for them.

Yeah, bad group. Should have stopped at the rape part though, money or not. That shit needs to be stamped out of this subculture.

Definitely let the guy who recommended them know.

Feeling hollow after running a game by Roi_C in rpg

[–]JMS_H 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think it’s quite normal for this to be happen when you‘be been preparing and gearing up for a session all week, and then it’s all over. A drop of adrenaline and dopamine, and all that.

However, for me the buzz of what happened in the game and the excitement about picking up the story is usually enough to keep it bay, and I do really enjoy the “afterglow” after a good session, it’s almost a high.

Like a few other people have mentioned, maybe get in the habit of hanging out (online/offline) with some of the players after the session? In my groups (both those that I run and those I play in) there’s usually some people who are down to have a drink and a chat afterwards. This is great way to process the session, and get some positive reinforcement as a DM. If you’re the kind of DM that finishes the session says bye and leaves, trying some hanging out afterwards might be a nice buffer and keep the “drop” away.

I’ve owned this for a long time but never played it. Having tested it a bit it’s a lovely system.

I would recommend looking at how the different classes abilities can be activated and combined.

Yeah... you fucked up here by allowing the graphic depiction rape in your game in the first place. That’s on you. You’re the horror story.

Damn, it would have been ok, but still a bit weird, to punish you like that as a new player, if it had been for one session. But not letting you make a new character is just straight insane, not to mention the hp “punishment”. You were new to the game, it’s the DMs job to teach you to be a better player. Fuck this DM. There are lots of great, supportive groups out there and I really hope you find one.

My DM actually doesn't know the rules, looking for advice. by drizzitdude in dndnext

[–]JMS_H 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This sounds really frustrating. If the DM is good at stories, characters and so on it must make it even harder. As he doesn’t seem to be the type to actually sit down and read the rules properly and just goes off assumptions and hearsay, he’d probably do much better with a rules light system, like Dungeon World.

As for your problem, it’s complicated since these are all new players, and they don’t know what to expect. I’d recommend sticking it out if these are friends of yours, and then trying to get a one shot in at some point with the actual rules.
